Chapter 5 - The Biological Secret

The Child Protective Services worker stepped forward, her eyes scanning the room with cold, clinical detachment.
I instinctively pulled Lily behind my back, shielding her from the terrifying reality of what Marcus was trying to do.
Chloe immediately stepped between me and the state worker, raising her hand to stop the woman in her tracks.
“I am this woman's legal counsel, and if you attempt to question my client or her child without a court order, I will personally sue the state for harassment,” Chloe declared forcefully.
The CPS worker glanced at Marcus, clearly annoyed by the escalating legal friction in the room.
“Mr. Miller claimed his daughter was being held in a dangerous, transient environment without access to basic necessities,” the worker stated, looking down at her clipboard.
Julian Rossi, the brilliant music director who had just discovered my daughter, stepped forward with an authoritative presence.
“That is completely absurd,” Julian scoffed, adjusting his expensive silk tie.
“Mrs. Miller and her daughter are currently under my personal patronage, and the child is enrolled in a fully funded, elite conservatory program.”
Marcus looked at Julian in absolute shock, unable to comprehend how I had secured such a powerful ally in less than twenty-four hours.
The CPS worker sighed heavily, making a swift, decisive note on her official evaluation form.
“There is clearly no immediate danger to this child, Mr. Miller, so this is now a matter for the family court judge on Monday morning,” she said before turning around and walking out the door.
Marcus’s face turned an ugly, volatile shade of purple as his malicious plan crumbled to pieces right in front of him.
“This changes absolutely nothing, Sarah!” Marcus yelled, desperately trying to regain control of the situation.
“You are broke, you are heavily in debt, and I will destroy you in front of the judge!”
Vanessa tugged on his sleeve, whispering frantically in his ear until they both finally retreated through the glass doors.
Once they were gone, my knees buckled entirely, and I collapsed into a nearby waiting room chair, shaking uncontrollably.
Julian gently placed a comforting hand on my shoulder and offered us the guest house on his private estate to ensure we were completely safe from Marcus.
That evening, safely tucked away in Julian’s luxurious guest cottage, I finally had a moment to think clearly.
I needed to understand why Marcus was willing to destroy his own life, career, and marriage just to provide for Vanessa’s son.
I opened the encrypted flash drive Chloe had managed to pull from Marcus's old tax records during her legal background check.
I began cross-referencing Vanessa's previous addresses with Marcus's business travel logs from eight years ago.
The dates aligned perfectly, revealing a long string of overlapping hotel stays in Chicago exactly nine months before Vanessa's son, Ethan, was born.
My hands trembled as I dug deeper, eventually bypassing Marcus's old medical insurance portal using a password I knew he never changed.
I opened a digital PDF file titled 'Routine Lab Results' from three years ago, when Marcus had suddenly become obsessed with his genetic health.
It was not a routine health screening at all.
It was a completely certified, legally binding paternity test.
I stared at the bold black letters on the glowing screen until my eyes physically burned with tears.

Ethan was not just the son of my husband’s coworker.
Ethan was Marcus’s biological son, conceived during an affair just a few weeks before we were married.
