Chapter 6 - The Traitor in the Shadows

The glowing screen illuminated my tear-stained face as the absolute magnitude of Marcus’s betrayal settled heavily into my bones.
He had not just made a terrible mistake; he had built our entire decade-long marriage upon a foundation of disgusting, unforgivable lies.
He had secretly funneled our marital assets to his illegitimate son while actively neglecting the beautiful daughter we shared.
I wiped my face with the back of my hand, feeling the agonizing heartbreak slowly transform into a cold, calculated rage.
If I brought a printed digital copy of this paternity test to court, Marcus's high-priced lawyers would immediately claim I forged it.
I needed the original, certified physical document from the testing clinic, or a sworn affidavit from a private investigator verifying the medical records.
The next morning, I used the remaining funds on my prepaid debit card to hire a highly recommended private investigator named Brody.
Brody was a tough, no-nonsense ex-cop who promised to acquire the certified medical records directly from the clinic's archives by the end of the day.
I spent the entire afternoon pacing the floor of Julian's guest house while Lily happily practiced complex scales on a grand piano in the main estate.
My entire future depended entirely on Brody securing that single piece of undeniable, damning evidence.
Just as the sun began to set, casting long, dark shadows across the manicured lawn, my burner phone finally buzzed with an incoming call.
“Did you get the certified documents, Brody?” I answered immediately, my voice tight with unbearable anticipation.
There was a long, uncomfortable silence on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of a heavy sigh.
“I got the documents, Mrs. Miller, but I am afraid there has been a slight change in our professional arrangement,” Brody replied slowly.
Confusion clouded my mind as I asked him exactly what he meant by that cryptic statement.
“I am a businessman, and your husband simply made me a financial offer that I could not possibly refuse,” Brody confessed without a single ounce of shame.
My blood ran completely cold as the horrifying reality of his words crashed over me.
“I just handed the original paternity documents over to Mr. Miller, and he watched me permanently delete the clinic's digital backup files,” Brody stated coldly.
“Do not ever contact me again, Mrs. Miller.”
The line went completely dead, leaving me standing in the silent room with absolute terror gripping my chest.
Marcus now possessed the only existing proof of his infidelity and financial fraud, and he had undoubtedly destroyed it the second Brody handed it over.
Without that crucial evidence, the judge would solely focus on the massive, fraudulent second mortgage attached to my name.
I was going to lose my daughter, go to prison for debt fraud, and Marcus was going to walk away completely unscathed.
But as I stared at my dark phone screen, a desperate, dangerous idea began to form in the back of my mind.

Marcus thought he had erased all the evidence, but he had forgotten one crucial detail about our Columbus townhouse.
He never changed the batteries in the hidden security camera I had installed inside the air vent of his home office two years ago.
