Chapter 7 - The Hostage

Cameron didn't wait for Matteo to give an order.
She turned and sprinted blindly down the hallway toward the nursery.
The strobe lights were still flashing, completely disorienting her senses.
She crashed through the wooden door of Leah’s bedroom and froze.
The window overlooking the city was shattered, letting freezing wind howl into the room.
Silas Kincaid was standing on the narrow balcony, holding the screaming three-year-old over the edge.
“Stay right there, nanny,” Silas yelled over the wind.
“Or the little heiress learns how to fly.”
Cameron put her hands up, her heart hammering violently in her chest.
“Please, Silas, she is just a little girl,” Cameron begged, stepping slowly toward the balcony.
“She is the only insurance policy I have left,” Silas snapped back.
Matteo ran into the bedroom, completely abandoning his cautious demeanor when he saw his daughter.
“I will give you everything, Silas!” Matteo screamed, falling to his knees.
“Take the company, take the offshore accounts, just give her back to me.”
Silas smiled, a twisted look of absolute victory on his face.
“I already have your money, Matteo.”
“Now I am going to make you feel the pain of losing everything you love.”
Silas tightened his grip on Leah’s small arm and stepped closer to the edge.
Cameron realized Silas had no intention of negotiating for his freedom.
He was a madman who only wanted revenge.
Cameron looked at the heavy wooden train Leah had thrown at her earlier that evening.
It was resting on the floor just inches from her right foot.
She didn't think about the consequences or the terrifying drop below.
Cameron kicked the wooden toy with all her strength directly at Silas’s legs.
The heavy wood struck his shin, causing him to stumble backward on the slick balcony tiles.
His grip loosened for a fraction of a second.
Cameron lunged forward and snatched Leah from his hands, pulling the child safely into the bedroom.

Silas lost his balance completely and tipped backward over the glass railing.
He disappeared into the dark abyss without making a single sound.
