Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

Cameron touched the wet blood on the keypad with her index finger.
It was warm and sticky.
Someone had recently tried to open this door from the hallway.
Matteo stood behind her, oblivious to the crimson smudge in the dim lighting.
“She sleeps for twenty hours a day,” Matteo explained.
“You are only to push the food tray through the bottom slot at midnight and six in the morning.”
Cameron quickly wiped the blood onto her dark jeans before he could see it.
“Understood,” Cameron lied.
“I will keep Leah away from this wing of the house.”
Matteo nodded and walked back toward his private study, leaving her completely alone.
Cameron hurried back to the living room where Leah was curled into a tight ball on the sofa.
“Leah, sweetheart, look at me,” Cameron whispered gently.
The little girl peeked out from behind her arms.
“Who else lives in this big house with you and your daddy?”
Leah shook her head slowly.
“Just the guards outside the front door.”
“Does anyone ever come to visit the blue room?”
Leah’s eyes widened with pure terror.
“The tall man comes when daddy goes to sleep.”
Cameron’s heart hammered against her ribs.
“Who is the tall man, Leah?”
“He brings the sharp needles.”
Cameron realized Matteo was not the one controlling the medications.
There was an unauthorized doctor entering the penthouse in the middle of the night.
She looked at her watch, noting it was already eleven thirty.
She carried Leah to her bedroom and tucked her safely into the expensive silk sheets.
Cameron then walked quietly back down the dark hallway toward the blue room.
She hid inside a utility closet, leaving the door cracked just enough to see the blue steel.
At exactly midnight, the service elevator chimed softly.
A tall man in a dark coat walked down the hallway carrying a silver medical case.
He punched a code into the keypad and the heavy door hissed open.
Cameron watched in absolute horror as the man stepped inside the blue room.

The man was not a hired doctor.
It was Silas Kincaid, Matteo’s most ruthless corporate rival, who was supposed to be in federal prison.
