Chapter 4 - The Ransom

Cameron covered her mouth with both hands to stop herself from screaming.
Silas Kincaid had been convicted of massive corporate fraud three years ago.
Matteo had been the key witness who put him behind bars.
Why was this man walking freely through Matteo’s secure penthouse?
Cameron waited until the heavy blue door clicked shut behind Silas.
She slipped out of the closet and crept toward the door, pressing her ear against the cold steel.
The room was highly soundproofed, but she could hear faint, muffled voices.
“The dosage is losing its effectiveness,” Silas said.
“She woke up twice yesterday.”
A woman’s voice answered, sounding weak and incredibly raspy.
“Just kill me, Silas.”
“I can't take this poison anymore.”
“You know I can't kill you, Elena,” Silas laughed cruelly.
“As long as I hold you hostage, Matteo will continue to transfer his company shares into my offshore accounts.”
Cameron felt the floor shift beneath her feet as the twisted reality became clear.
Matteo was not a monster keeping his crazy wife locked away to protect his image.
Matteo was a victim of a massive, ongoing extortion plot.
Silas had faked his own imprisonment and faked Elena’s death to control Matteo’s empire from the shadows.
Matteo probably believed the medication was the only thing keeping his violent wife calm.
He didn't know Silas was secretly poisoning her to maintain leverage.
Cameron had to warn Matteo before Silas destroyed the entire family.
She stepped back from the door and turned to run toward the private study.
She only made it two steps before a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder.
Cameron gasped and spun around, coming face to face with Matteo’s head of security.
“You shouldn't be snooping around, Ms. Jenkins,” the guard said coldly.

He pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at her chest.
“Mr. Kincaid doesn't like loose ends.”
