Chapter 6 - The Unlocked Door

Matteo stared at Cameron as if she had just spoken in a foreign language.
“Silas is in federal prison,” Matteo said, his voice trembling with confusion.
“He is in the blue room right now,” Cameron choked out, rubbing her bruised throat.
“He paid off your security team and he has been poisoning Elena.”
Matteo looked down at his unconscious head of security bleeding on the floor.
He reached into the guard’s jacket and pulled out a spare weapon.
Matteo didn't ask any more questions.
He sprinted down the dark hallway toward the blue steel door.
Cameron pushed herself off the floor and ran after him, terrified of what would happen next.
Matteo reached the keypad and punched in his master override code.
The heavy locks disengaged with a loud, mechanical clank.
Matteo kicked the door open and raised his weapon.
The room was heavily padded with white leather and smelled strongly of sterile chemicals.
Elena was strapped to a medical bed in the center of the room, looking pale and dangerously thin.
But the room was completely empty.
Silas Kincaid was nowhere to be found.
“Elena!” Matteo cried out, dropping his gun and rushing to his wife’s side.
He frantically unbuckled the heavy leather restraints holding her wrists down.
Elena opened her eyes weakly, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks.
“He went through the vent, Matteo,” Elena rasped, pointing a shaking finger at the ceiling.
Cameron looked up and saw a massive, open air duct directly above the bed.
Silas had heard the alarm and escaped through the building's ventilation system.
“We have to get you to a hospital,” Matteo said, lifting his fragile wife into his arms.
Elena shook her head violently, gripping his shirt with desperate strength.
“No, Matteo, you have to get Leah.”
May you like
“Silas didn't escape to save himself.”
“He went through the vents to get to Leah’s bedroom.”
