Chapter 8 - The Frozen Depths

The dark water of the frozen lake rushed up to meet them at terrifying speed.
Damon wrapped his massive body entirely around Alina to absorb the brutal impact of the crash.
The helicopter smashed through the thick layer of winter ice with a deafening, metallic crunch.
Freezing, pitch-black water instantly flooded into the shattered cabin from every direction.
Alina felt the breath completely knocked out of her lungs as the freezing temperature paralyzed her muscles.
The helicopter began sinking rapidly into the murky, terrifying depths of the lake.
Damon kicked the remaining glass out of the window, fighting against the crushing water pressure.
He grabbed Alina tightly by the waist and shoved her upward toward the faint moonlight shining through the ice.
Alina kicked her legs desperately, her lungs burning for a single breath of fresh air.
She broke the surface of the freezing water, gasping violently as the freezing wind hit her wet face.
She looked around frantically, but the dark water was completely empty and silent.
Damon had not surfaced beside her.
Alina screamed his name, her voice echoing mournfully across the vast, frozen landscape.
She took a deep breath and bravely dove back into the freezing, deadly darkness.
She swam downward, her hands blindly searching the submerged wreckage for the man she loved.
She finally felt the rough fabric of his torn shirt snagged on a twisted piece of metal.
Alina pulled with every ounce of strength in her tiny body until the metal finally bent.
She dragged Damon's heavy, unconscious body back up to the surface of the freezing lake.
She pulled him onto a thick slab of unbroken ice, shivering so violently she could barely speak.
Damon was not breathing, and his lips were entirely blue from the freezing water.
Alina began performing desperate, frantic chest compressions on his muscular chest.

She begged him not to leave her, crying hot tears that froze instantly on her cold cheeks.
Suddenly, the distinct, terrifying sound of a gun being cocked echoed right behind her head.
