Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

The morning after the gala, Wall Street was a bloodbath.
Clara didn't just pull the funding from the DuPont-Lancaster ventures; she publicly shorted their stock. She released an anonymous, highly detailed dossier to the SEC outlining the exact offshore bribery accounts Julian had been using for five years—the same accounts Clara had memorized before she fled.
In the Obsidian Capital boardroom, Clara watched the massive digital ticker tape. Lancaster Shipping stock was in a freefall. Down forty percent. Then fifty.
Her office phone buzzed. "Ms. Rostova," her assistant said. "Julian Lancaster is in the lobby. He is demanding to see you. He bypassed security."
"Send him in," Clara said smoothly, taking a seat behind her massive desk.
Julian burst through the doors, looking like a madman. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled. The polished, golden boy of high society was gone.
"What are you doing?!" Julian screamed, slamming his hands onto her desk. "You're destroying my company! The SEC just raided our headquarters!"
"Correction, Julian," Clara said, casually inspecting her manicured nails. "I am destroying Genevieve's company. You were never more than her puppet."
"I am your husband!" Julian shouted, desperation cracking his voice.
"You lost the right to that title the night you left me in a hospital room to bleed out so you could marry a trust fund," Clara spat, dropping the calm facade. Her eyes blazed with a fury that made Julian physically recoil. "You promised to protect me. You promised to protect our child. Instead, you sold us."
"I had no choice!" Julian pleaded, tears welling in his eyes. "My mother threatened to cut me off! I didn't know she was going to take the baby, Clara, I swear!"
"Ignorance is not an alibi for cowardice," Clara said coldly. She pulled a document from her drawer and pushed it across the desk. "Sign it."
Julian looked down. It was a total forfeiture of his shares to Obsidian Capital, in exchange for a buyout that would barely cover his current legal debts.
"If I sign this, I lose everything. I'll be ruined," Julian whispered.
May you like
"If you don't sign this," Clara leaned forward, her voice a deadly promise, "I give the FBI the unredacted files proving you personally signed the wire transfers to a federal judge. You won't just be ruined, Julian. You will spend twenty years in federal prison."
Julian’s hands shook violently. He looked at the woman he had broken, realizing too late that she had put herself back together with razor blades. With a suffocating sob, he picked up the pen and signed his empire away.
