Chapter 2 - The Midnight Ghost

Pain radiated through Clara’s abdomen with every step, a blinding agony that threatened to send her crashing to the linoleum floor. But the small, warm bundle strapped to her chest in a makeshift sling gave her an unnatural strength.
She had dressed in the dark, stealing a pair of scrubs and a medical mask from a linen closet down the hall. Little Leo was asleep, sedated by the sheer exhaustion of birth, bundled tightly against her beating heart.
The VIP maternity ward was heavily guarded, but Clara had spent three years navigating the Lancaster empire; she knew how they operated. They relied on intimidation, not observation. She bypassed the main elevators, slipping through the heavy fire doors into the maintenance stairwell.
"Hey! You can't be in here!"
Clara froze. Standing on the landing below was a young nurse, holding a clipboard, her eyes wide with alarm. She looked at Clara’s pale, sweating face, then down to the bundle on her chest, and finally to the trail of blood spotting Clara’s stolen scrub pants.
Clara backed against the concrete wall, her hand instinctively shielding her baby. "Please," Clara begged, her voice cracking. "They're going to take him. My husband's family... they're going to take my baby and lock me away. Please."
The nurse, a girl named Maggie whose nametag was pinned crookedly to her chest, hesitated. She had seen Madame Genevieve arrive. She had heard the vicious whispers at the nurse's station about the Lancaster payoff.
Maggie looked at the security camera in the corner of the stairwell, then pulled a set of keys from her pocket.
"The camera on the loading dock is broken," Maggie whispered rapidly, rushing up the stairs and grabbing Clara’s arm. "My car is a blue Honda Civic. License plate ends in 44. The keys are in the visor. Take it. Drive to the state line and ditch it. Don't stop for gas until you're out of New York."
Clara took the keys, tears of profound gratitude welling in her eyes. "Why are you helping me?"
"Because my mother had my sister taken from her by a man with too much money and a good lawyer," Maggie said bitterly. "Run, Clara. Run now."
Clara didn't hesitate. She descended the stairs, bursting through the loading dock doors into the freezing, rain-slicked night. The biting wind cut through her thin scrubs, but she didn't care. She found the blue Civic, scrambled into the driver’s seat, and locked the doors.

As she peeled out of the hospital parking lot, her tires screeching against the wet asphalt, she looked in the rearview mirror. The towering, illuminated hospital looked like a fortress. She had escaped the gilded cage.
But as she looked down at the sleeping face of her son, a cold realization settled over her. Escaping wasn't enough. Genevieve Lancaster would hunt her to the ends of the earth. The only way to truly protect her son was to destroy the Lancasters completely. And to do that, she needed a monster of her own.
