Chapter 3 - The Exiled King

The motel in upstate New York smelled of stale cigarette smoke, damp mildew, and desperation. It was a place where people went to disappear.
Clara sat on the edge of the sagging mattress, cradling a feverish Leo. It had been three days since she fled the hospital. The cash she had stolen from Julian’s bedside safe was running low, and her physical strength was failing. Her C-section incision was burning, a clear sign of infection.
She stared at a disposable burner phone resting on the cheap laminate nightstand. She had one move left. It was a dangerous, desperate gamble, but a cornered mother has no luxury of caution.
She picked up the phone and dialed a number she had memorized from a restricted file on Julian’s laptop two years ago. It rang four times before a deep, gravelly voice answered.
"Who is this?" the man demanded.
"Silas," Clara breathed, leaning against the headboard. "It's Clara. Julian’s wife."
Silence stretched over the line, thick and heavy. Silas Lancaster was Julian’s older brother. He was the brilliant, volatile outcast who had been systematically framed for embezzlement and banished from the family empire by Genevieve ten years ago to ensure Julian—the compliant, easily controlled son—took the throne. Silas hated Genevieve and Julian more than he cared about breathing.
"Well," Silas chuckled, a dark, scraping sound. "The little socialite bird flew the coop. I saw the news, Clara. Genevieve is telling the press you suffered a tragic postpartum psychotic break and kidnapped the Lancaster heir. There is a two-million-dollar bounty on your head."
"She tried to buy him, Silas. She tried to pay me off and banish me so Julian could marry the DuPont heiress," Clara choked out, the exhaustion finally breaking her composure. "I need help. I have no one else."
"Why would I help the woman who married the brother who stole my life?" Silas asked coldly.
"Because I can give you back your empire," Clara said, her voice hardening, wiping the tears from her face. "I managed Julian’s private accounts for three years. I know where the offshore shell companies are. I know which senators Genevieve is bribing. I have the account numbers memorized. You want to watch Lancaster Shipping burn to the ground? Come to Room 12 at the Starlight Motel in Albany. I'll hand you the matches."

There was a long pause. When Silas finally spoke, the amusement was gone. Only a lethal, predatory interest remained.
"Lock the door, Clara. I’m an hour away."
