Chapter 1 - The Blood Price

Madame Genevieve Lancaster did not walk; she glided, a predator inspecting a wounded bird. She paused at the foot of the hospital bed, her immaculate Chanel suit a stark contrast to Clara’s sweat-stained hospital gown. She didn't look at the bassinet in the corner of the room. She only looked at Clara, her dark eyes devoid of anything resembling human warmth.

"You look terrible, Clara," Genevieve said, her voice smooth, cultured, and laced with venom. "But then again, breeding is such messy business for those unaccustomed to it."

Clara tried to speak, but the oxygen mask muffled her voice. She reached up with a trembling, bruised hand and pulled the plastic away from her face. "Where is Julian?" she rasped, her throat feeling like shattered glass.

"Julian is where he belongs," Genevieve replied, opening her crocodile-skin clutch. "He is in Geneva, finalizing the merger with the DuPont family. A merger that, as you know, requires a certain... social alignment."

Clara’s heart flatlined in her chest. The DuPonts. They had an unmarried daughter. The rumors that had haunted the last months of her pregnancy—the whispered phone calls Julian took in the middle of the night, the sudden business trips—they weren't just rumors.

"He promised he would be here," Clara whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down her pale cheek.

"My son says many things to appease the emotional hysterics of lower-class women," Genevieve sighed, pulling a crisp, heavily embossed envelope from her clutch and tossing it onto Clara’s lap. "Inside is a cashier's check for ten million dollars. A generous severance package. There are also legal documents. You will sign full custody of the boy over to the Lancaster estate. You will pack a bag, you will disappear to Europe, and you will never contact Julian or this child again."

Clara stared at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. "You want to buy my son?"

"I am buying Lancaster Shipping’s heir," Genevieve corrected coldly. "Julian will marry the DuPont girl next month. They will raise the boy as their own. It is a clean, perfect narrative. You, Clara, are simply the temporary vessel that has outlived its usefulness."

The sheer, unapologetic cruelty of the statement acted like a shot of pure adrenaline straight into Clara’s heart. The exhaustion vanished. The pain in her battered body was suddenly eclipsed by a primal, terrifying maternal rage.

"Get out," Clara breathed.

Genevieve arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "Excuse me?"

"I said, get out!" Clara snarled, her voice gaining strength, echoing off the sterile white walls. "I will never sign those papers. And if Julian wants his son, he can come look me in the eye and try to take him!"

Genevieve’s smile vanished, replaced by a mask of icy fury. She leaned over the bed, her expensive perfume suffocating Clara. "You have no money, Clara. You have no family. You have no power. By tomorrow morning, I will have a judge declare you mentally unfit. I will take that boy, and I will leave you in a psychiatric ward to rot. Think very carefully about your next move."

The matriarch turned on her heel and marched out of the room, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind her. Clara was left alone with the rhythmic hiss of the oxygen machine and the soft, fragile cooing of her newborn son.

She looked at the ten million dollar check. Then, she looked at the IV in her arm. She ripped the needle out, ignoring the blood that spilled down her wrist. She didn't have until tomorrow morning. She had tonight.
