Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Bloodline

Maya stopped struggling the moment she recognized the billionaire's deep, commanding voice.

Alexander slowly removed his hand from her mouth, his dark eyes scanning the corridor for any sign of pursuit.

He looked completely different from the cold, arrogant man in the ballroom upstairs.

His expensive tie was torn off, and his crisp white shirt was stained with dark grease.

"I had to arrest you publicly to make Victoria think she had completely won," Alexander explained quickly.

He revealed that Victoria's powerful family held the only existing antidote to a slow-acting poison.

That rare poison was currently running through his mother's veins, slowly shutting down her organs.

The titanium USB drive contained the chemical formula needed to synthesize a cure.

Mrs. Sterling had stolen it from Victoria's private vault earlier that evening.

Alexander explained that he could not openly fight Victoria until the data on that drive was safely decrypted.

Maya pulled the cold metal drive from her apron and handed it to the desperate son.

"We need to get to the main security terminal on the fourth floor to crack the encryption," he said.

They began to move silently through the narrow, dusty servant passages, ascending the hidden staircases.

They were just yards away from the security room when the wooden panel wall suddenly shattered inward.

Victoria's armed mercenaries had breached the secret corridors using heavy sledgehammers.

A loud gunshot echoed deafeningly through the narrow, wooden space.

Alexander pushed Maya safely behind a brick chimney, but he let out a sharp cry of agony.

Maya looked down in absolute horror as a dark red stain began spreading rapidly across Alexander's chest.
