Chapter 2 - The Hidden Drive

Maya was violently shoved into a dark, windowless holding room deep in the palace basement.
The heavy steel door slammed shut behind her, leaving her in absolute, terrifying darkness.
She stumbled backward, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Why would Alexander Sterling betray the very person who had just saved his mother from a physical attack?
The injustice burned in her chest, but panic quickly replaced her anger.
She reached a shaking hand into the deep pocket of her standard maid apron to find her handkerchief.
Instead of soft fabric, her fingers brushed against a small, cold piece of hard metal.
Maya pulled the object out and held it up to the dim sliver of light coming from under the door.
It was an expensive, heavily encrypted titanium USB drive.
She suddenly remembered the frail old woman grabbing her apron strings right before Victoria tried to strike her.
Mrs. Sterling had intentionally slipped this drive into Maya's pocket during the chaotic scuffle.
The billionaire's mother was clearly trying to hide something incredibly dangerous from her own son.
Before Maya could process this horrifying realization, the lock on the heavy door clicked open.
She backed against the concrete wall, expecting the security guards to come take her to the police.
The heavy door creaked open, but it was not a uniformed guard standing in the hallway.

It was Victoria, holding a gleaming medical syringe filled with a strange blue liquid.
"Hand over what the old bat gave you, or I stop your heart right now," Victoria whispered with a wicked smile.
