Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

I screamed and instinctively curled my body completely over Leo to protect him.
Lorenzo did not flinch, his body shifting flawlessly into a fighting stance.
"You sold me out to a dead woman, Matteo?" Lorenzo asked, his voice echoing with lethal calm.
Matteo chuckled, stepping fully into the bunker to allow three heavily armed mercenaries to enter behind him.
"Sophia survived the bomb with a few burns, and she took over the rival cartel," Matteo explained.
"She needs the kid alive so she can legally claim the Rossi empire when I put a bullet in your brain."
I held my breath, terrified that my son was about to be orphaned in a dirty underground room.
Lorenzo slowly raised his hands, playing the role of a defeated man perfectly.
"Let Hunter and the baby walk away, Matteo," Lorenzo bargained.
"They mean absolutely nothing to Sophia."
Matteo shook his head, gesturing with his weapon for us to move toward the door.
"Sophia specifically ordered me to bring the real mother so she can finally tie up loose ends," the traitor laughed.
They forced us out of the bunker and marched us up the stone stairs toward the main foyer.
The mansion was completely overrun with Sophia's mercenaries, and Lorenzo's loyal guards were nowhere in sight.
Smoke billowed from the west wing, signaling that they had set the estate on fire to cover their tracks.
We were pushed into the grand living room, where the crystal chandeliers cast a shattered light on the marble floors.
Standing in the center of the room, wearing a tailored black suit and a silk scarf to hide her burn scars, was Sophia.
She smiled wickedly as she laid eyes on me and the baby clutched in my arms.
"Hunter, you did such a wonderful job keeping my property alive," Sophia mocked.
I glared at her with a mother's fierce, unstoppable hatred.
"He is my son, not your property," I spat back at her.
Sophia sighed dramatically and raised a silver handgun, pointing it directly at Lorenzo's chest.
"Hand over the baby, maid, or I will kill Lorenzo right now," Sophia ordered.
May you like
Lorenzo looked at me and gave a microscopic, almost invisible nod of his head.
Without hesitation, he lunged forward, grabbing the barrel of Sophia's gun with his bare hands.
