Chapter 2 - The Silent Killer

The realization that my baby was murdered stole the air directly from my lungs.

I clutched Leo tighter, sobbing uncontrollably as the weight of Lorenzo's words crushed my soul.

Lorenzo knelt beside my chair, his intimidating presence suddenly feeling like a protective shield.

"You are not leaving this house, Hunter," he declared with absolute authority.

"You are the only thing keeping my son alive, and I protect what is mine."

He promised to find the people who murdered my child and make them pay in blood.

I looked down at Leo, who had finally fallen into a peaceful, satisfied sleep against my chest.

I carefully adjusted my uniform, feeling a strange, fierce maternal instinct fiercely rising within me.

Lorenzo stood up and walked over to the night nurse, who was still slumped in the chair by the window.

"Wake up, Maria," Lorenzo barked, clearly annoyed by her incompetence.

The nurse did not move a single inch.

Lorenzo frowned and placed his hand heavily on her shoulder.

Maria's body immediately slumped forward, crashing onto the hardwood floor.

I screamed, covering Leo's ears to protect him from the sudden noise.

Maria's eyes were wide open, staring blankly at the ceiling.

A small, empty syringe rolled out from her limp hand and stopped near Lorenzo's expensive shoes.

Lorenzo quickly drew his weapon, his eyes scanning the dark corners of the nursery.

"She didn't fall asleep," he whispered dangerously.

"Someone injected her with a lethal paralytic while you were holding my son."

I realized with horrifying clarity that the killer had been in this very room just moments ago.

The assassin was not here for the nurse.

I looked over at the baby formula station across the room.

The sterile water bottles had been tampered with, leaving a faint residue of white powder on the counter.

The assassin had poisoned Leo's food, and the nurse was just collateral damage.

Lorenzo hit the panic button on his watch, immediately locking down the entire two-billion-dollar estate.

"Whoever did this is still inside the mansion," Lorenzo growled.

Then, the nursery lights suddenly flickered and went completely dark.
