Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past
The revelation hit me with the force of a speeding train, leaving me entirely breathless.
My baby was alive.
For three agonizing weeks, I had mourned a child that was currently out there somewhere in the world.
"Who took my baby?" I demanded, my voice cracking with uncontrollable rage and desperation.
Lorenzo poured a glass of water and handed it to me, his expression hardening into a lethal mask.
"We are going to find out tonight," he promised, pulling his encrypted phone from his jacket.
He ordered his men to kidnap the corrupt doctor from the hospital and bring him to the estate's interrogation room.
I spent the next three hours sitting in the safe room, feeding Leo whenever he woke up fussy.
Lorenzo stayed by my side, watching me nurse his son with a mixture of awe and protective intensity.
I realized that the ruthless mafia boss everyone feared was truly just a desperate, loving father.
Around midnight, Matteo entered the bunker, his expensive suit covered in fresh blood.
"The doctor talked," Matteo announced, tossing a recorded audio file onto the table.
"He admitted he was paid a million dollars to swap the babies and falsify the death certificate."
I jumped to my feet, accidentally waking Leo, who let out a soft, sleepy sigh.
"Who paid him?" Lorenzo demanded, his hand resting heavily on his holstered weapon.
Matteo hesitated, looking incredibly uncomfortable for a hardened criminal.
"Play the recording, Matteo," Lorenzo barked.
Matteo pressed a button on the device, and a woman's voice filled the silent bunker.
"Make sure the decoy body looks convincing, Doctor, or I will end your life," the voice threatened.
Lorenzo staggered backward, his face draining of all color as he recognized the audio.
I looked at him in pure confusion.
"Who is that woman?" I asked fearfully.
Lorenzo stared at the recording device as if it were a venomous snake.

"That is Sophia," he whispered in sheer disbelief.
"My wife who supposedly died in the car bomb two months ago."
