Chapter 6 - The Ambush

Dominic slammed the SUV into reverse, the tires screaming against the wet pavement.

Gunfire erupted, heavy caliber bullets pinging violently against the bulletproof windshield.

He spun the steering wheel hard, executing a perfect J-turn on the narrow highway.

"Get on the floor!" he roared to the backseat.

Elena pulled Sofia down into the footwell, shielding the child with her own frail body.

Dominic floored the accelerator, driving straight through a metal chain-link fence on the shoulder.

The SUV bounded violently over the rough terrain of an abandoned construction site.

The mercenaries in the truck scrambled into chase vehicles, their headlights cutting through the darkness behind him.

Dominic knew this area well; it was a property his construction company was developing.

He aimed the heavy vehicle toward a half-finished concrete parking garage.

He drove up the spiraling ramp, his tires slipping dangerously close to the exposed edges.

He reached the fourth floor and slammed the brakes, hiding the car behind a massive concrete pillar.

He killed the engine and the lights, plunging them into absolute darkness.

"Stay down and do not make a sound," he whispered, drawing his weapon.

He slipped out of the driver's side door, merging seamlessly into the shadows.

He could hear the screeching tires of the pursuit vehicles entering the ground floor.

Footsteps echoed on the concrete stairs as the armed men began their search.

Dominic crept toward the stairwell, moving with the lethal silence he was famous for.

The first man stepped onto the landing, his assault rifle raised.

Dominic grabbed him from behind, snapping his neck with a brutal, sickening twist.

He caught the falling rifle before it hit the ground, checking the magazine.

He stepped out into the open, unleashing a hail of bullets on the remaining three men on the stairs.

They fell backward, their bodies tumbling down the concrete steps into the darkness.

Dominic breathed heavily, lowering the hot weapon as silence returned to the garage.

He walked back to the armored SUV, feeling a brief moment of grim satisfaction.

He opened the rear door to check on Elena and Sofia.

The backseat was completely empty.

The opposite door was hanging wide open, swinging gently in the cold night wind.
