Chapter 4 - The Escape

Dominic stared down the barrel of the gun with absolute icy calm.
"You are making a fatal mistake, Evans."
The doctor's hand trembled violently, giving away his overwhelming fear.
"Marcus said they would kill my wife if I didn't hold you here."
Dominic didn't blink.
He slammed his foot on the accelerator while simultaneously grabbing the doctor's wrist.
The sudden lurch of the armored SUV threw Dr. Evans backward onto the concrete floor.
The bullet fired harmlessly into the ceiling as Dominic slammed the passenger door shut.
He tore out of the hidden garage, driving up the steep ramp that led into the surrounding forest.
The heavy iron camouflage doors burst open, spitting the SUV into the pouring rain.
He navigated the treacherous dirt roads without turning on his headlights.
In the backseat, Sofia was sobbing quietly, burying her face into her mother's chest.
Elena suddenly gasped, her eyes snapping open in the darkness.
She coughed violently, spitting up a small amount of dark blood onto her chin.
"You drove away," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring engine.
"I got us out," Dominic replied, looking at her in the rearview mirror.
"You shouldn't have done that," she wheezed, struggling to sit up.
"You have no idea who you are actually running from."
"I am running from Marcus and whatever cartel bought his loyalty," Dominic snapped back.
Elena let out a dry, bitter laugh that ended in another coughing fit.
"Marcus didn't betray you for money, Dominic."
"He betrayed you because he knows what you did to my brother eleven years ago."
Dominic slammed on the brakes, sending the SUV sliding across the wet asphalt.
He turned around in his seat, his mind racing to make sense of her words.
"I have no idea who your brother is," he stated firmly.
Elena looked at him with pure, unadulterated hatred burning in her sick eyes.
