Chapter 5 - The Confession

The name hit Dominic like a physical blow to the stomach.
Detective Thomas Vance was the lead investigator who had built the RICO case against the Moretti family.
He had been shot to death in an alleyway eleven years ago.
The murder remained unsolved, but everyone in the underworld assumed Dominic's father had ordered the hit.
"I didn't kill Thomas," Dominic said quietly, the tension in the car suffocating.
"I was away in Europe finishing my degree when that happened."
Elena shook her head, tears streaming down her pale face.
"You are lying to me just like your father lied to everyone."
"I saw you pull the trigger with my own two eyes."
Dominic froze, staring at the woman who was supposedly the mother of his child.
"If you think I murdered your brother, why did you come to me for help tonight?"
Elena coughed again, her strength visibly fading with every passing second.
"Because your father promised me that Sofia would inherit the true Moretti fortune if I stayed silent."
"But the poison in my veins proves that somebody decided to tie up loose ends."
Dominic turned back to the steering wheel, his mind piecing the puzzle together.
His father had faked Dominic's involvement, using a body double to commit the murder.
He had used Elena as a pawn, binding her to the family through a child.
He pressed the gas pedal again, driving toward a secure safe house in the city.
"We are going to find the real killer, Elena."
"But right now, I need you to stay alive for our daughter."
Elena looked down at Sofia, gently stroking the little girl's wet hair.
"She is not your daughter, Dominic," Elena whispered softly.
"She is your father's daughter."
The revelation crashed over Dominic, making the road ahead blur out of focus.
Sofia was not his child.
She was his half-sister, born from a desperate, horrific arrangement.

Before Dominic could speak, a massive garbage truck pulled directly across the road ahead.
Bright halogen lights blinded him as armed men poured out of the back of the truck.
