Chapter 3 - The Security Breach

Vincent pretended to be completely exhausted and closed his eyes.

He told Lauren he needed to rest before lunch.

Lauren kissed his forehead with cold, trembling lips and quickly left the room.

The moment the door clicked shut, Vincent opened his eyes and looked at Tessa.

He whispered that they needed to find the receiver immediately.

Tessa grabbed an empty laundry basket to use as a cover story.

She stepped out into the grand hallway, keeping her phone hidden beneath a pile of white towels.

The frequency scanner app continued to pulse silently on her screen.

She walked slowly past the guest bedrooms, but the signal grew weaker.

She descended the back staircase toward the first floor, her heart hammering against her ribs.

The signal began to spike as she approached the employee wing.

She slipped into the security monitoring room while the day guards were distracted in the kitchen.

The small room smelled of stale coffee and electronic ozone.

Tessa watched her phone screen turn bright red as she approached the row of metal employee lockers.

The signal was strongest in front of locker number four.

She looked at the nameplate bolted to the metal door.

The locker belonged to Marco, Vincent's head of security and oldest, most trusted friend.

Tessa reached out with trembling fingers to try the combination lock.

Suddenly, a massive, heavy hand grabbed her shoulder with terrifying force.

Tessa gasped and spun around, dropping the laundry basket to the floor.

Marco was standing directly behind her.

His dark eyes were completely dead, devoid of any human warmth.

He stepped closer, trapping her against the metal lockers.

Marco asked her in a low, dangerous whisper what she was looking for.
