Chapter 6 - The Labyrinth of Lies

The blinding spotlight pinned Emily and Maria to the dirty concrete floor.
Dozens of armed mercenaries stepped out from behind the wooden shipping crates, their rifles raised.
David walked casually down the metal stairs of the catwalk, clapping his hands in a slow, mocking rhythm.
He was dressed in a pristine white suit that contrasted sharply with the filthy warehouse.
“You truly have a talent for surviving, my dear wife.”
“But your little crusade ends here, tonight.”
Maria sobbed uncontrollably, staring at the strange man peeling off the mask of her brother.
“Where is he?” she screamed, trying to lunge forward.
Two heavy guards grabbed Maria by the arms and slammed her roughly into the side of the van.
Emily stood tall, refusing to show David the fear that was tearing her apart inside.
“If you kill us, Chloe will never give you the access codes to the offshore accounts.”
David stopped walking and tilted his head, a cruel smile playing on his lips.
“Oh, Emily, you really are hopelessly naive.”
He snapped his fingers loudly, signaling someone in the shadows.
A sleek black limousine drove slowly into the center of the warehouse.
The rear door opened, and a woman stepped out wearing a stunning red designer dress.
It was Chloe, Emily's treacherous sister.
She walked gracefully toward David and wrapped a loving arm around his waist.
She leaned up and kissed him passionately in front of everyone.
Emily felt completely nauseous watching the disgusting display of betrayal.
“David and I have been in love since before he even met you,” Chloe purred maliciously.
“You were just the pathetic, trusting fool we needed to unlock father's inheritance clause.”
Emily clenched her fists until her knuckles turned perfectly white.
“You murdered our own father for money, Chloe.”
Chloe rolled her eyes and inspected her perfectly manicured nails.
“He was old, weak, and giving too much of our rightful fortune to charity.”
“Now, if you will excuse me, we have a midnight flight to catch to a non-extradition country.”
David pulled a silver handgun from his jacket and aimed it at Emily's chest.
“Goodbye, darling.”
“May your second funeral go much smoother than the first.”
Just as David placed his finger on the trigger, the warehouse power completely failed.
The entire building plunged into absolute, terrifying darkness.
Chaos erupted as the armed mercenaries began shouting in confusion.
Gunfire echoed blindly into the high ceiling, sending sparks raining down on the concrete.
Emily felt a strong hand grab her wrist in the pitch black.
She opened her mouth to scream, but a calloused hand covered her lips.
A deep, unfamiliar voice whispered urgently into her ear.
“Keep absolutely quiet if you want to live.”
The stranger pulled her forcefully into the narrow gaps between the heavy shipping crates.
They ran blindly through the maze of wooden boxes as flashlights began sweeping the area.
They finally stopped behind a massive stack of steel pipes near the loading dock.
The emergency lights suddenly flickered on, casting a dim red glow over the area.
Emily finally got a good look at her mysterious savior.
It was the senior paramedic from the ambulance who had supposedly transported her to the hospital.
He pulled out a heavy tactical rifle and handed Emily a spare magazine.
“My name is Arthur, and your father hired me five years ago to protect you if this day ever came.”

Before Emily could process this shocking information, Arthur pointed to a timer strapped to his tactical vest.
“We have exactly sixty seconds to get out of this building before the explosive charges I planted detonate.”
