Chapter 4 - The Sister's Secret

Emily stumbled back into the busy hospital hallway, her mind completely shattered by the revelation.
Her own sister, Chloe, was the mastermind behind this horrific nightmare.
They had grown up together, shared secrets, and promised to always protect each other.
Now, Chloe was actively conspiring with David to steal the family empire.
Emily pushed through the crowded hospital lobby and stepped out into the freezing night air.
She had no money, no safe place to hide, and the police were actively working against her.
She needed to find Maria before David's hired killers reached the county holding cells.
She flagged down a passing taxi and promised the driver a massive tip if he hurried.
She gave him the address of her family's downtown corporate law firm.
Emily knew there was a secret emergency safe hidden in the senior partner's office.
Her father had shown it to her years ago, long before his suspicious death.
The taxi dropped her off in a dark alley behind the towering glass skyscraper.
She used her executive keycard, hoping David hadn't thought to deactivate it yet.
The green light flashed, and the heavy security door clicked open.
She navigated the dark, silent hallways using only the pale moonlight filtering through the windows.
She reached the executive suite and moved a heavy oil painting aside to reveal the wall safe.
She quickly typed in the six-digit code: her father's birthday.
The metal door swung open, revealing stacks of emergency cash and untraceable passports.
She stuffed the money into her pockets, feeling a small spark of hope.
But as she reached for the passports, her fingers brushed against a thick, leather-bound folder.
The folder was labeled with a single word in bright red ink: Classified.
Emily pulled it out and opened it on the mahogany desk.
Inside was a heavily redacted autopsy report belonging to her late father.
The official story had always been a sudden, massive heart attack.
But the hidden toxicology report listed the exact same rare paralytic drug that had been used on Emily.
Tears welled in her eyes as she realized her father had been brutally murdered.
Chloe and David had been planning this total family takeover for years.
Suddenly, the bright overhead lights in the office flickered on.
Emily froze, dropping the heavy folder onto the floor.
A tall, shadowed figure stood in the doorway holding a silenced pistol.
It was Detective Vance, the man who had arrested Maria earlier that day.
He stepped into the room and locked the door behind him with a loud click.
“You are a very difficult woman to kill, Emily.”
He raised the dark weapon and aimed it directly at her chest.
“But your sister is paying me a ridiculous amount of money to make sure you never leave this building.”
Emily backed away slowly, her hands raised in defense.
She frantically searched the dark office for any possible weapon.
Detective Vance smiled and slowly squeezed the cold metal trigger.
A loud, echoing gunshot shattered the silence of the office.
But Emily didn't feel any pain.
Detective Vance gasped violently, dropping his weapon as he fell forward onto the carpet.
Standing behind him in the doorway was a frantic, heavily breathing Maria.
She was holding a smoking revolver in her trembling hands.
“I escaped the transport van,” Maria whispered, staring at the dead cop.

Before Emily could even say thank you, Maria raised the gun and pointed it directly at Emily's head.
“And now you are going to tell me where the rest of the money is.”
