Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

Maria was instantly slammed against the hospital wall by a massive police officer.

The cold steel handcuffs clicked sharply around her slender wrists.

Emily tried to sit up in her bed, her mind spinning with absolute disbelief.

“You are making a terrible mistake!”

“She is the only reason I am alive today!”

The lead detective ignored her desperate pleas entirely.

He casually wrote something down in his small leather notebook.

“Ma'am, we have security footage showing Maria stealing medical supplies from a pharmacy last week.”

Emily looked at David, who was standing quietly in the corner of the room.

He was trying to hide a deeply satisfied smirk.

He had orchestrated this entire frame-up to eliminate the only witness.

As they dragged a screaming Maria down the hallway, Emily knew she was next.

Once the police left the room to process the paperwork, David turned to face his wife.

“It is a real tragedy that your loyal servant snapped under the pressure.”

He walked over to the heart monitor and traced his finger along the plastic wiring.

“You have about an hour before the hospital changes the security shift.”

“I suggest you spend that time making peace with your maker, my dear.”

David chuckled softly and walked out of the room, leaving the door slightly ajar.

Emily knew she could not rely on the corrupt police to protect her.

She slowly pulled the heavy IV needle out of the back of her bruised hand.

A small drop of blood spilled onto the crisp white hospital sheets.

Her legs trembled violently as she swung them over the edge of the bed.

She felt incredibly dizzy, but adrenaline pushed her forward.

She opened the wooden closet door and found a set of blue nurse scrubs left behind by a careless staff member.

She quickly stripped off her hospital gown and pulled the baggy uniform over her freezing body.

She tied her messy hair back and grabbed a surgical mask to cover the lower half of her face.

She peeked out into the busy hospital corridor.

Nurses and doctors were rushing past, paying absolutely no attention to her.

She kept her head down and walked slowly toward the emergency exit stairs.

Just as she reached the heavy metal door, she heard a familiar voice echoing from the stairwell.

It was David, and he was arguing fiercely with someone on his cell phone.

Emily pressed her back against the cold concrete wall and held her breath.

“I don't care how much it costs, I need Maria dead before she makes it to the county jail!”

David sounded increasingly panicked and angry.

“If she talks to the state prosecutors, this entire operation falls apart.”

Emily pulled out her own cell phone, which she had found in her personal belongings bag.

She quickly hit the record button, hoping to capture his murderous confession.

“Yes, I am looking at the legal documents right now,” David continued pacing.

“Once Emily's heart finally stops tonight, the estate automatically transfers to your offshore account.”

Emily frowned, wondering who could possibly be on the receiving end of that massive fortune.

David paused, listening to the person on the other end of the line.

“Do not worry, Chloe.”

Emily felt a sickening jolt in her stomach as she heard the name.

David let out a dark, menacing laugh that chilled Emily to the bone.

“Your dear sister won't live to see the sunrise.”
