Chapter 2 - The Hospital Interrogation

The blaring siren of the ambulance pierced through the quiet afternoon air.
Emily lay perfectly still on the stretcher, staring blankly at the metal ceiling of the vehicle.
An oxygen mask covered her face, delivering sweet, life-saving air to her aching lungs.
Maria, the loyal maid, sat tightly in the corner of the ambulance, refusing to let Emily out of her sight.
David had furiously demanded to ride with his wife, but the paramedics had denied him access.
They had seen the terrifying accusation Emily had made in the chapel.
The hospital emergency room was a chaotic blur of bright lights and shouting doctors.
They rushed Emily into a private trauma suite to stabilize her rapidly dropping blood pressure.
Maria was forced to wait in the cold, sterile hallway.
She paced back and forth, praying that she had not acted too late.
After two agonizing hours, a stern-faced doctor finally emerged from the room.
He informed Maria that Emily was incredibly lucky to be alive.
A powerful paralytic drug had slowed her heart rate to an undetectable level.
It was a miracle the embalming process had been delayed by a legal dispute over the estate.
Maria felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead as she realized how close Emily came to a permanent grave.
Suddenly, David stormed through the sliding glass doors of the emergency room.
He was flanked by two massive men wearing expensive suits and dark sunglasses.
He completely ignored Maria and marched directly toward his wife's private room.
Maria jumped in front of the wooden door, spreading her arms wide to block his path.
“You are not going in there!”
David glared at her with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
“She is my legally wedded wife, and you are just a fired servant.”
He violently shoved Maria aside, sending her crashing into a row of plastic waiting chairs.
David threw open the hospital door and stepped inside.
Emily was awake, staring at him with eyes full of venom and fear.
“Get out of my room, David.”
David casually locked the door behind him and closed the window blinds.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, pre-filled medical syringe.
“You always were a very stubborn woman, Emily.”
He took a step closer to the bed, tapping the needle with a calm, practiced finger.
“I just need to finish what I started before the police get heavily involved.”
Emily tried to scream, but her throat was still terribly bruised and dry.
She pressed the emergency call button frantically, but the machine had been unplugged from the wall.
David smiled a cruel, terrifying smile as he grabbed her arm.
Suddenly, the heavy hospital door was kicked open with tremendous force.
Two uniformed police officers rushed into the room, their weapons drawn.
“Drop the syringe right now and put your hands in the air!”
David immediately dropped the plastic needle, acting completely shocked and innocent.
He raised his hands slowly, feigning absolute confusion.
“Officers, I am just a terrified husband trying to administer my wife's insulin.”
The older officer approached the bed and carefully picked up the fallen syringe.
He placed it inside an evidence bag and handed it to a forensic technician waiting in the hall.
Ten minutes later, the lead detective walked into the tense hospital room.
He looked at David, then at Emily, holding a preliminary lab report in his hand.
Emily felt a surge of hope, knowing David was finally going to prison.
The detective cleared his throat and looked directly at the hospital staff.
“Arrest the maid.”
Emily gasped loudly, her heart dropping into her stomach.

The detective held up the plastic bag containing the deadly syringe.
“The fingerprints on this weapon belong exclusively to Maria.”
