Chapter 9 - The Empire Burns

Edmund staggered backward, his chest heaving as if he could not pull enough oxygen into his lungs.

He looked at Constance with a mixture of absolute disgust and world-shattering betrayal.

For thirty-five years, he had paraded Calvin around Boston as the heir to the Pemberton legacy.

He had worshipped Arthur Crane as a mentor, never knowing the man was sleeping with his wife in his own home.

Constance reached out for him, tears finally streaming down her perfectly manicured face.

She begged Edmund to listen to her, claiming she only did it to secure their financial future at the firm.

Edmund slapped her hand away with such force that the sound echoed like a gunshot in the silent room.

He turned to the two senior partners, who were watching the destruction of their firm's leadership in real-time.

Edmund ordered them to freeze all of Calvin's trust accounts immediately.

He announced that he was filing for an expedited divorce and a complete dissolution of Arthur's financial assets.

Calvin fell into a leather chair, sobbing uncontrollably as his inheritance and his identity vanished in a single moment.

He looked at his mother, finally realizing the horrific monster she truly was.

Constance screamed at me, blaming me for destroying her family.

I looked at her with cold, unflinching resolve.

I told her that she destroyed her own family the day she decided my son was not good enough for her fake legacy.

Tessa packed her briefcase swiftly and signaled that it was time for us to leave.

We walked out of the conference room, leaving the Pembertons screaming at each other amidst the ruins of their lies.

The fallout was swifter and more brutal than anyone could have predicted.

By Monday morning, Edmund had officially thrown Constance out of their Brookline mansion.

He publicly disowned Calvin and filed massive lawsuits to reclaim every dollar Arthur Crane had left them.

The scandal leaked to the press, utterly destroying the reputation of Pemberton, Holloway, and Crane.

The state medical board immediately dropped their investigation against me once the senior partners confirmed the documents were authentic.

Calvin showed up at my brownstone one last time, looking completely broken and destitute.

He stood on the porch in the freezing rain, begging me to take him back so he could see Henry.

I opened the door just enough to slide a manila envelope into his hands.

It contained the final divorce papers and a legally binding document granting me sole custody of our son.

I told him to sign them, or I would ensure he never found employment in the state of Massachusetts again.

He signed them on the porch, his tears mixing with the freezing rain.

I closed the door, finally severing the last tie to the Pemberton nightmare.
