Chapter 7 - The Founding Partner

I stared at the glowing screen, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Arthur Crane was the most powerful and ruthless attorney in Boston.

He was the man who had built Pemberton, Holloway, and Crane from the ground up.

Edmund was just a junior partner who had ridden Arthur's coattails to wealth and status.

Constance had secured her luxurious lifestyle by sleeping with the man who controlled her husband's paycheck.

This secret was not just a scandal; it was a motive for corporate fraud.

I printed the documents and secured them in a waterproof safe hidden under my floorboards.

The next morning, I met Tessa at a discreet coffee shop across town.

I slid a copy of the documents across the table.

Tessa read the name and nearly choked on her coffee.

She looked up at me with sheer awe and terror in her eyes.

She explained that Arthur Crane had passed away three years ago.

When he died, he left his massive fortune and his controlling shares of the firm entirely to Edmund.

Everyone in the legal community had been shocked that Arthur did not leave the firm to his own extended family.

But looking at this document, it all made perfect, sickening sense.

Arthur had left his empire to Edmund because he knew Edmund was raising his only biological son.

Constance and Arthur had orchestrated the inheritance to ensure Calvin would eventually inherit everything.

But Edmund had absolutely no idea that his entire life’s work was built on his wife's betrayal.

Tessa smiled a predatory smile.

She said we were no longer going to fight them in family court.

We were going to drag them into a public mediation with the firm's other partners present.

Tessa filed an emergency motion demanding a settlement mediation regarding Calvin's trust fund.

She specifically requested that the senior partners of the firm attend to verify the financial disclosures.

Judge Harrison, likely eager to please Edmund, granted the mediation request immediately.

He thought he was helping his friend corner a desperate woman.

He had no idea he was giving me the exact stage I needed.

The mediation was scheduled for Friday morning in the grand conference room of Pemberton, Holloway, and Crane.

I spent the next three days preparing my evidence with meticulous precision.

When Friday arrived, I dressed in a sharp navy suit and walked into the glass high-rise.

Tessa walked beside me, carrying a single black leather briefcase.

We entered the conference room to find Edmund, Constance, and Calvin sitting confidently at the long table.

Two other senior partners sat at the far end, looking deeply annoyed to be involved in a domestic dispute.

Constance wore a triumphant smirk, assuming I was there to surrender and accept her money.

She had no idea that I was holding a match, and she was sitting in a room full of gasoline.
