Chapter 2 - The Midnight Offer

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind my in-laws.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Calvin stood in the center of the foyer, looking like a man who had just watched his entire world fracture.

He reached out to touch Henry, but I stepped backward.

I asked him how long he had been planning to throw me out of my own home.

He stammered, claiming it was all his mother's idea.

He said she had hired a private investigator who took photos of me having lunch with a male colleague.

Constance had spun a simple work meeting into a fabricated narrative of infidelity.

She had used Calvin's insecurities to orchestrate a brutal ambush on the day I brought our son home.

I told Calvin to pack his own bags and leave.

He begged me to let him stay, swearing he would cut his parents off forever.

I walked past him and locked myself in the nursery with Henry.

I listened to my husband cry in the hallway for an hour before he finally went to sleep in the guest room.

At exactly two in the morning, my phone lit up in the dark nursery.

It was a text message from Constance.

It told me to be reasonable and take the offer.

I turned on the bedside lamp and opened the craft envelope she had left on the coffee table.

It contained a drafted separation agreement on Pemberton, Holloway, and Crane letterhead.

They were offering me two million dollars to walk away and leave Henry with Calvin.

I took a picture of the document and sent it to Tessa Garrison.

Tessa was a ruthless family law attorney I knew through my work in the hospital's legal records department.

She replied three minutes later, telling me not to sign a single page.

By breakfast, Tessa had opened a privileged legal folder for me.

She told me that placing a fraudulent separation agreement on their firm's official letterhead was a massive ethical violation.

They had handed us the exact weapon we needed to destroy them.

Tessa drafted a petition to the Suffolk County Probate and Family Court.

We were asking the court to formally confirm Henry’s paternity.

But Tessa added one small, brilliant detail to the filing.

She requested a court-authorized release of one section of Edmund Pemberton’s old hereditary cancer screening file.

We were subpoenaing Edmund's genetic lineage background data.

I walked out of the nursery to find Calvin sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked at me with bloodshot eyes and told me he had just spoken to his mother.

He said Constance was threatening to call child protective services if I did not accept the money.
