Chapter 8 - The Mediation

The mediator, a retired judge with a stern face, called the room to order.
He stated that the purpose of the meeting was to finalize the financial separation and custody arrangements.
Edmund steepled his fingers and spoke with his usual arrogant drawl.
He announced that they were willing to offer me one million dollars to relinquish all parental rights.
It was half of what Constance had offered me in secret.
Calvin kept his eyes fixed on the mahogany table, refusing to look at me.
Tessa stood up smoothly and opened her black leather briefcase.
She stated that we were rejecting their financial offer in its entirety.
Edmund scoffed and warned us that Judge Harrison would leave me penniless if this went to trial.
Tessa smiled and pulled a stack of pristine medical files from her briefcase.
She slid the first document across the table directly to the two senior partners.
She announced that the financial disclosures provided by the firm were fundamentally fraudulent.
Edmund’s face turned bright red as he slammed his fist on the table.
He demanded to know how his firm’s finances were relevant to my divorce.
I stood up, resting my hands on the cool wood of the table.
I looked directly at Constance, whose triumphant smirk was rapidly melting into sheer terror.
I stated that the finances were relevant because Calvin's trust fund was funded by Arthur Crane.
The room went deadly silent.
The two senior partners stopped flipping through the documents and stared at me.
Edmund laughed nervously, claiming that Arthur had left the money to the firm out of professional respect.
I pulled the final piece of paper from the briefcase and slid it directly to Edmund.
I told him in a clear, unwavering voice that Arthur left the money because Calvin was his biological son.
Edmund froze, his eyes scanning the irrefutable DNA evidence.
His face drained of all color, matching the pale shade Calvin had turned days earlier.
Constance leaped out of her chair, screaming that the documents were forged by a bitter woman.
But the senior partners were already looking at the attached hospital certification stamps.
They were seasoned lawyers; they knew real evidence when they saw it.
Edmund slowly looked up from the paper and turned his head toward his wife of nearly forty years.
His breathing was ragged, and his hands shook violently.
He asked Constance if it was true in a voice so quiet it sent chills down my spine.
Constance opened her mouth, but no words came out.
The silence in the room was the loudest confession I had ever heard.

Calvin jumped up and grabbed his father's arm, begging him not to believe the lies.
Edmund violently shoved Calvin away, realizing the boy he had raised was the living proof of his ultimate humiliation.
