Chapter 6 - The Stolen Key

I watched the pieces of paper flutter to the floor, my mind struggling to process Calvin's willful ignorance.
He was staring directly at the medical truth, but he chose to believe his mother's poisonous lies.
I demanded to know how he had entered my home.
He pulled a silver key from his pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table.
He coldly stated that his name was still on the mortgage, giving him every right to be there.
I told him that the house was purchased entirely with money from my late grandfather's trust.
Calvin sneered and told me that his father's law firm had already filed a motion to freeze all my assets.
They were going to bleed me dry in court until I could no longer afford to fight them.
He walked toward the nursery, demanding to see his son.
I stepped directly into his path, blocking the hallway.
I warned him that if he took one more step, I would call the police.
Calvin stopped, his jaw clenching in frustration.
He leaned in close, his voice dripping with venom.
He told me that I was a nobody who had tried to destroy a legacy I could never understand.
He promised that Henry would be raised in the Pemberton house, far away from my influence.
Then he turned on his heel and walked out the front door.
I immediately called a locksmith to change the locks again and upgrade the security system.
Tessa called me an hour later with more terrible news.
The judge overseeing our case had just recused himself due to a sudden conflict of interest.
The case had been reassigned to Judge Harrison, a man who regularly played golf with Edmund Pemberton.
Constance was pulling every string she had in the city to ensure I lost everything.
I realized that playing defense was no longer an option.
I had to burn their entire empire to the ground before they could take my son.
I opened my laptop and logged into a secure medical database using a backdoor access code I had created years ago.
I was technically on leave, but my access had not been fully purged from the legacy servers.
I began searching through decades of archived birth records from the year Calvin was born.
If Edmund was not the father, I needed to know who was.
I cross-referenced Constance's medical files with the hospital's private donor and VIP records.
It took me six hours of relentless digging through heavily redacted files.
Finally, I found a sealed addendum attached to Calvin's original birth certificate.
The name listed as the biological father made my blood run completely cold.
May you like
Constance had not just had an affair with a random man.
The biological father was Arthur Crane, the senior founding partner of Edmund's own law firm.
