Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Memory

Julian gritted his teeth as a wave of intense dizziness washed over him.

He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

Victoria gasped when she saw the dark puddle of blood spreading across the driver's seat.

She desperately grabbed the wheel and helped him steer the van off the main highway.

They crashed into a chain-link fence and came to a violent stop in an abandoned junkyard.

Julian slumped forward against the steering wheel gasping for every single breath.

Victoria frantically tore a strip of fabric from her expensive evening gown.

She pressed the silk hard against the bullet wound in his side to stop the bleeding.

Tears streamed down her face as fragmented memories suddenly flooded her mind.

She remembered hiding in the boiler room and she remembered Julian holding her hand.

She whispered that she finally knew who he was and begged him not to die.

Julian gave her a weak smile and said he had promised to always protect her.

He pulled his encrypted phone from his pocket with shaking bloody fingers.

He told Victoria to access his secure files to find Arthur's hidden financial ledger.

The ledger was the only piece of evidence that could expose the stolen inheritance.

Victoria rapidly typed the password and brought up a massive encrypted blueprint.

The blueprint showed that Arthur's digital ledger was kept in an underground vault beneath the city bank.

Julian coughed up blood and said they needed to break into that vault tonight.

Victoria shook her head and refused to leave him bleeding in a rusted van.

She insisted on driving him to an underground doctor she knew from her high-society connections.

She climbed over the console and shoved Julian into the passenger seat.

Before she could shift the van into reverse the headlights of three black SUVs flooded the junkyard.

Arthur Sterling stepped out of the lead vehicle holding the silver locket in his hand.

He smiled coldly and shouted that he was tired of playing games with orphans.
