Chapter 6 - The Standoff

The heavy black pistol slid across the polished hardwood floor and bumped gently against my knee.
I stared at the weapon for a split second, my heart hammering fiercely against my ribs.
I had never fired a gun in my entire life, but the sound of my husband fighting for his life just a few feet away erased all my fear.
I grabbed the heavy metal grip, pulled myself out from under the table, and stood up in the middle of the chaotic brawl.
I aimed the barrel directly at the ceiling and pulled the trigger with both hands.
The suppressed gunshot was not incredibly loud, but the sound of the bullet shattering the plaster ceiling was enough to freeze the entire room.
Every single person stopped fighting and turned to look at the terrified mother holding the deadly weapon.
I leveled the gun directly at the loan shark, who was just beginning to push himself up from the ruined floor.
I ordered him and his men to drop all their weapons and back away toward the front doors.
The loan shark glared at me, completely humiliated, but he could see that my finger was trembling dangerously on a hair-trigger.
He slowly raised his hands and nodded to his bleeding enforcers, signaling them to stand down.
The armed men reluctantly placed their weapons on the floor and began to back away slowly.
Brandon breathed heavily, his face bruised and bleeding, as he rushed over to stand safely beside me and Holly.
He proudly told me that I was doing perfectly, instructing me to keep the gun absolutely steady.
Gene watched this entire scene unfold from the floor, her ankle bleeding from the dog bite and her pride completely shattered.
She realized she was about to lose her money, her house, and her freedom all in one single morning.
Gene suddenly lunged forward and snatched the brass key from the floor where it had been dropped during the scuffle.
She scrambled to her feet and sprinted wildly toward the back doors leading down to the basement.
She screamed that if she could not have the money, she would make sure nobody else could either.
May you like
Brandon shouted for me to stay with the family before he sprinted down the dark hallway after his unhinged mother.
A loud, metallic slam echoed through the house as Gene locked the heavy basement door securely from the inside.
