Chapter 10 - The True Family

The fire department managed to extinguish the flames before they destroyed the main structure of the house, leaving only the basement in ruins.
The holidays were entirely chaotic, but for the first time in three years, they were finally free of Gene’s toxic, suffocating shadow.
With Gene securely locked away in a federal penitentiary without bail, the remaining family members scattered and quietly returned to their own lives.
Brandon officially took full control of the estate, completely selling the massive property and donating a large portion of the profits to a children’s charity.
We used the rest of the funds to purchase a beautiful, bright home in a quiet neighborhood entirely far away from the old family drama.
Holly flourished in her new environment, completely shedding the quiet, fearful demeanor she had worn like armor at Gene’s house.
She finally realized she was not just a guest in our lives, but the very center of our entire universe.
Brandon legally finalized his adoption of Holly in the spring, crying tears of absolute joy when the judge officially stamped the paperwork.
He framed the original, cheap handwritten tag that said "To Brandon's Girl" and hung it in his home office as a permanent reminder of the day they fought for their family.
We spent our first Christmas in the new house surrounded entirely by people who genuinely loved and respected us.
There were no strict rules, no forced polite smiles, and absolutely no cheap vanilla candles.
Holly sat on the floor, laughing wildly as Brandon helped her assemble a massive, complicated toy castle.
I watched them from the kitchen, holding a warm cup of coffee and feeling a profound, deep sense of total peace.
The nightmare was finally over, and our family was completely whole, safe, and unconditionally happy.
That night, after Holly was safely tucked into bed and the house was quiet, Brandon went outside to check the mail.
He walked back into the living room holding a strange, unmarked black envelope sealed with a thick drop of crimson wax.

He tore the envelope open, pulling out a single, terrifyingly clear photograph of our brand new house taken from the woods just hours ago.
Attached to the back of the photo was a handwritten note that read: "Gene stole the money, but your real father is coming to collect his blood."
