Chapter 1 - The Revelation

Gene stared into the small red velvet box as a high-pitched scream ripped from her throat.

The delicate silver fork slipped from her trembling fingers and clattered loudly against her fine china plate.

Every single conversation in the elegant dining room stopped instantly.

A cousin standing near the window flinched so hard he nearly spilled his champagne over the expensive Persian rug.

Holly stood perfectly still, her small hands resting politely at her sides as she watched her grandmother’s polished composure completely shatter.

I held my breath, instinctively sliding my chair closer to my daughter to protect her from whatever was about to happen.

Gene looked up from the box, her face completely drained of color, her eyes wide with a mixture of absolute terror and boiling rage.

Brandon rose slowly from his chair, his expression unreadable as he stared down the woman who had made our lives miserable for three years.

He calmly asked his mother if she wanted to share what was written on the folded white card.

Gene slammed the velvet lid shut, her perfectly manicured hands shaking violently against the white tablecloth.

She tried to force a laugh, but the sound was hollow, broken, and completely devoid of her usual arrogance.

She told the rest of the family that it was just a sick, tasteless joke and demanded that everyone return to their meals immediately.

But nobody moved a muscle.

Brandon reached across the table and snatched the red velvet box right out of her trembling hands.

He opened it, pulled out the folded white card, and prepared to read it out loud to the entire family.

Gene lunged forward across the expensive crystal glasses, desperately trying to claw the card away from him.

Brandon easily stepped back, holding the paper high above her reach.

He announced to the silent room that the brass key in the box opened a specific storage unit in downtown Chicago.

He read the card, which detailed exactly how Gene had secretly drained the family trust funds over the past ten years to pay off massive illegal gambling debts.

The older cousins dropped their thick envelopes of cash, suddenly realizing the money inside was likely stolen from their own inheritances.

Gene realized her entire empire of lies had just collapsed in front of the people she cared about impressing the most.

She backed away from the table, her eyes darting frantically toward the heavy oak doors of the dining room.

She screamed for her private security guards, ordering them to lock every single door and window in the estate.

The heavy locks clicked into place with a terrifying, synchronized thud.

Gene reached into the top drawer of the mahogany buffet table and pulled out a small, silver handgun.
