Chapter 3 - The True Heir

My heart stopped completely as the barrel of the gun leveled at Holly’s tiny, terrified face.
I threw myself entirely over my daughter, screaming at Gene that she was completely out of her mind.
Brandon moved faster than I had ever seen him move, stepping directly into the line of fire between his mother and us.
He told Gene that if she even thought about pulling that trigger again, he would tear her apart with his bare hands.
Gene sneered at him, stating that he had always been far too weak and sentimental, just like his late father.
She spat out that Holly was nothing but a cheap little stray who did not deserve a single drop of the family's legacy.
She proudly confessed that she had never intended to leave Brandon a single cent because he had betrayed the bloodline by marrying a woman with baggage.
The cruel words hung in the air, completely shattering the facade of the perfect, polite family brunch.
Brandon’s expression did not change to anger, but rather to a cold, calculating pity.
He told Gene that she was completely wrong about who actually owned the estate they were currently standing in.
He revealed that his father had secretly suspected Gene of financial fraud months before he passed away.
Brandon explained that his father had quietly transferred the absolute deed of the house and all remaining offshore assets into an impenetrable blind trust.
Gene shook her head violently, screaming that she had seen the will and she was the sole beneficiary.
Brandon pulled a second, smaller document from his suit jacket and tossed it onto the shattered dining table.
He announced that the true beneficiary of the entire family fortune was legally named just three days ago.
The entire family watched as Gene snatched the paper from the table and frantically read the legal text.
Her hands began to shake uncontrollably as she saw the name highlighted in bold black ink at the bottom of the page.
The sole owner of the multi-million dollar estate and all remaining family wealth was my seven-year-old daughter, Holly.

Gene dropped the paper, her eyes rolling back in pure fury as she realized a child she despised now legally owned her entire life.
A heavy, terrifying knock suddenly pounded against the locked mahogany front doors of the house.
