Chapter 3 - The Getaway
Bullets tore through the thin walls of the Blue Pine, showering the parking lot with debris.
Sebastian shoved Norah behind a dumpster just as a shot sparked against the metal.
His car, a heavily armored luxury sedan, was parked twenty yards away in the darkest corner of the lot.
He tossed Norah a spare set of keys and told her to start the engine while he provided cover fire.
Norah didn't hesitate, sprinting through the freezing rain as Sebastian fired precise, calculated shots to keep Vance's men pinned down.
She slid into the driver's seat, her trembling fingers stabbing the ignition button.
The engine roared to life, sounding like a caged beast ready to break free.
Sebastian dove into the passenger seat a second later, blood grazing his left shoulder.
Norah slammed the gas pedal, tearing out of the parking lot just as the black sedan peeled out to pursue them.
They merged onto the empty highway, pushing the speedometer past ninety.
Sebastian applied pressure to his bleeding shoulder, his eyes scanning the side mirrors.
The black sedan was gaining on them, its headlights blinding in the rearview mirror.
Norah swerved to avoid a blown tire on the road, nearly losing control on the slick asphalt.
Sebastian reached over, grabbing the steering wheel with his good hand.
He told her to take the upcoming dirt road, a hidden logging trail that didn't appear on any GPS maps.
Norah killed the headlights and ripped the emergency brake, sliding the car violently into the dark trees.
They held their breath as the black sedan roared past them on the highway, completely missing their turnoff.
The silence of the woods settled around them, broken only by the sound of rain hitting the roof.
Sebastian slowly turned his head to look at her, his expression unreadable in the dark.

He locked the car doors with a sharp click.
Then he raised his gun, pointing it directly at Norah's chest, and demanded to know exactly who she really was.
