Chapter 3 - The Crossfire

Luca tackled me to the hard tile floor as a hail of bullets tore through the bakery.

Glass rained down on us like deadly confetti.

I covered Ash and Lena with my own body, praying the bullets would miss them.

Luca pulled a heavy black pistol from his coat with lightning speed.

He fired blindly into the dark street to force the shooters to take cover.

He grabbed my arm and dragged us all toward the steel door of the basement freezer.

We practically fell down the concrete stairs into the freezing darkness.

Luca slammed the heavy door shut and locked the deadbolt.

I held my crying children tight, my heart pounding so hard it hurt my ribs.

I asked Luca who was trying to kill us.

He checked the magazine of his gun and told me those were not his men.

He explained that someone had placed a massive bounty on my head the night Marco died.

He had been tearing the country apart trying to find me before the assassins did.

The heavy steel door above us began to dent inward as someone pounded on it with a sledgehammer.

Luca told me to take the kids and run through the old Prohibition tunnel at the back of the basement.

I refused to leave him behind to die alone.

He looked at me with the same fierce love that used to make me feel invincible.

He promised me he would find us again.

Suddenly, a bloody hand reached out from the dark corner of the basement and grabbed my ankle.

It was Mr. Pike, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

He coughed up blood and whispered that the local police were the ones shooting at us.
