Chapter 9 - The Final Ambush

My heart completely stopped as the three masked gunmen charged toward the shattered front door.
This was not Grant’s amateur attempt at revenge.
These men moved with the terrifying, silent precision of highly trained military professionals.
I instantly realized they were the deadly cartel enforcers sent to recover the millions in lost narcotics.
I quickly retreated back into the shadows of the grand foyer, holding Noah tightly against my chest.
I knew I could never outrun them, and the panic room was too far away in the basement.
I ducked behind a massive, solid oak pillar just as the gunmen entered the house.
"Find the woman and the kid," the lead gunman ordered in a thick, raspy voice.
"The boss wants them as collateral until the billionaire pays us back for the seized shipment," he instructed.
I held my breath, silently praying that Noah would not wake up and cry.
The men separated, sweeping the luxurious living room and the formal dining area with their flashlights.
One of the masked killers slowly began walking toward the grand staircase, right past my hiding spot.
I squeezed my eyes shut, preparing for the absolute worst.
Suddenly, a deafening gunshot echoed through the massive house, shattering a priceless crystal vase on a nearby table.
The gunman near the stairs screamed in agony and collapsed onto the hardwood floor, clutching his shattered kneecap.
The other two killers spun around wildly, aiming their heavy rifles toward the front entrance.
Elias Vale stood in the shattered doorway, holding a smoking tactical shotgun.
His designer suit was wrinkled and torn, but his eyes burned with the absolute fury of a protective father.
He did not look like a polished corporate CEO anymore.
He looked like a ruthless, unstoppable force of pure violence.
"Drop your weapons immediately, or the next shot goes directly through your skulls," Elias roared.
The two remaining cartel enforcers hesitated, realizing they were completely outmatched by the furious billionaire.
Before they could make a decision, Elias's elite private security team swarmed into the house behind him.
Dozens of laser sights instantly appeared on the chests of the masked gunmen.
They smartly dropped their heavy rifles and raised their hands in total surrender.
Elias's men quickly moved in, violently tackling the enforcers to the ground and securing them with heavy zip-ties.
"Clear the rest of the house!" the head of security barked loudly.
Elias threw his shotgun to a guard and sprinted desperately into the grand foyer.
"Chloe!" Elias shouted, his voice cracking with absolute panic.
I stepped out from behind the heavy oak pillar, tears streaming down my face.
Elias practically tackled me in a massive, crushing hug, wrapping his strong arms around both me and our son.
"I am so sorry I was not here," Elias whispered fiercely into my hair.
"You are here now," I sobbed, burying my face completely into his broad chest.
He kissed my forehead, my cheeks, and carefully kissed Noah's tiny, sleeping head.
"It is over, Chloe," Elias promised, his breathing slowly returning to normal.
"The cartel will never bother us again, my team is wiping out their entire local operation as we speak," he added coldly.
The nightmare was finally, truly over, and we were completely safe.
A few hours later, the police arrived to arrest the cartel enforcers, and Elias's team began repairing the damaged estate.
We sat together on a plush velvet sofa in the sunroom, watching the beautiful morning light fill the house.
Noah was wide awake now, cooing softly as Elias gently stroked his tiny hand.
"Harrison called," Elias said quietly, not taking his eyes off our beautiful son.
"Your father signed over the remaining Mercer Development assets to avoid a massive federal prison sentence," he reported.
"He and your mother are officially bankrupt, and Grant is facing life without parole," Elias concluded.
I felt absolutely nothing for the family that had treated me like garbage my entire life.
They had built their own toxic prison of lies, and now they had to live in it forever.

"I only care about my real family now," I said, leaning my head against Elias's strong shoulder.
Elias smiled a genuine, breathtaking smile and pulled a small velvet box from his pocket.
