Chapter 6 - The Federal Raid

My heart slammed violently against my ribs as the word "DEA" echoed from the radio.

"Why would the Drug Enforcement Agency be attacking your home?" I whispered in sheer terror.

Elias stared at the heavy wooden door of the nursery, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might shatter.

"They are not here for me," Elias realized with a sudden, chilling clarity.

"They are here for the cargo Grant secretly stored in my warehouses," he growled.

The horrifying truth finally connected the missing pieces of Grant's massive crimes.

The illegal offshore loans were not just for poor real estate investments.

Grant had used Mercer Development's shipping infrastructure to smuggle illicit narcotics into the country.

"When I initiated the hostile takeover, I legally assumed responsibility for all of his active shipping containers," Elias explained quickly.

"Grant tipped off the federal authorities and used his bail money to frame me as the mastermind," Elias concluded.

The sound of heavy boots pounding up the grand staircase echoed through the hallway outside.

"FBI and DEA! Open the door immediately!" a booming voice shouted aggressively.

Elias quickly unloaded his weapon and tossed it completely out of reach.

He knew that fighting federal agents would result in a deadly shootout with me and Noah in the room.

He raised his empty hands perfectly in the air and nodded at me to stay calm.

"Do not fight them, Chloe, I have the best lawyers in the world," Elias promised softly.

The heavy wooden door of the nursery was violently kicked off its hinges.

Six heavily armed federal agents stormed into the room with assault rifles raised.

"Get on the ground right now!" the lead agent roared, aiming his weapon directly at Elias's chest.

Elias slowly lowered himself to his knees, keeping his hands clearly visible.

"I am unarmed, and my newborn son is sleeping in that crib," Elias stated with absolute, icy calm.

"Check the room and secure the suspect," the agent barked to his team.

Two agents roughly grabbed Elias by the arms and slammed him face-down onto the plush carpet.

They slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists, completely ignoring his cooperative stance.

I screamed and lunged forward, but an agent immediately blocked my path.

"Ma'am, step back from the suspect immediately," the agent warned sternly.

"He is innocent! My brother Grant set him up to cover his own drug smuggling operations!" I shouted desperately.

The lead agent looked at me with a completely blank, unsympathetic expression.

"We found two hundred kilos of pure narcotics sitting inside a warehouse registered entirely under Mr. Vale's name," the agent stated coldly.

"He is facing federal trafficking charges and a minimum of thirty years in maximum security prison," the agent added.

They hauled Elias forcefully to his feet and dragged him toward the shattered doorway.

Elias looked back at me over his shoulder, his dark eyes filled with absolute determination.

"Call Harrison immediately," Elias ordered me before they shoved him down the hall.

"Do not leave the estate, Chloe, my men will protect you!" he yelled as his voice faded away.

I collapsed onto the floor beside Noah's crib, weeping uncontrollably as the agents left.

The man I loved, the powerful billionaire who had just saved me, was now facing a lifetime in federal prison.

I scrambled to grab Elias's discarded phone and dialed Harrison, his lead defense attorney.

Harrison answered on the first ring, his voice incredibly tense and rushed.

"I already know about the raid, Chloe, I am heading to the federal holding facility right now," Harrison said.

"We have to prove Grant planted those drugs to frame him," I pleaded frantically.

"I am working on it, but the evidence against Elias is completely damning on paper," Harrison admitted grimly.

"Stay inside the safe room and do not open the door for anyone but my private security team," Harrison instructed.

I hung up the phone and pulled Noah out of his crib, holding him tightly against my chest.

Suddenly, the lights in the entire mansion flickered violently and went completely black.

The backup generators failed to kick on, plunging the house into total, terrifying darkness.

A soft, mocking chuckle echoed from the shadows of the nursery doorway.

"The feds are so incredibly easy to manipulate, aren't they, little sister?" Grant whispered from the darkness.
