Chapter 7 - The Brother's Betrayal

I froze entirely in the pitch-black nursery, clutching Noah tightly to my chest.
Grant's heavy footsteps slowly entered the room, his expensive leather shoes crunching on the broken door frame.
"How did you get past Elias's security?" I demanded, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound brave.
Grant let out a dark, arrogant laugh that sent shivers down my spine.
"I didn't have to fight his security," Grant boasted casually.
"I simply waited for the DEA to breach the gates, and I walked right in wearing a stolen federal windbreaker," he explained.
He clicked on a powerful tactical flashlight, blinding me momentarily with the harsh beam.
When my eyes finally adjusted, I saw that Grant was holding a suppressed silver pistol.
"You really thought you could steal my company and live happily ever after with that billionaire?" Grant sneered.
"I built Mercer Development with my own two hands, Chloe," he argued delusionally.
"You stole millions of dollars and used our family name to smuggle dangerous narcotics," I shot back fiercely.
Grant waved the gun dismissively as if my accusations were merely minor accounting errors.
"It was just business expansion," Grant justified with a terrifyingly blank expression.
"And now, Elias takes the fall for the drugs, and I get to eliminate the final witness tying me to the offshore accounts," he said coldly.
He raised the silver pistol and aimed it directly at me and my newborn son.
"Goodbye, little sister," Grant whispered, completely devoid of any familial love.
Pure maternal instinct exploded violently inside my brain.
I refused to let this monster hurt my innocent child.
I grabbed a heavy glass baby bottle from the changing table and hurled it directly at Grant's face.
The heavy glass smashed squarely into his forehead, causing him to stagger backward with a shout of pain.
The flashlight dropped from his hand, plunging the room back into chaotic, spinning shadows.
I did not hesitate for a single second.
I kicked off my shoes and sprinted blindly toward the shattered doorway, holding Noah securely against my body.
Grant fired a wild shot into the darkness, the suppressed bullet tearing through the drywall inches from my head.
I ran desperately down the grand staircase, ignoring the agonizing pain in my recovering body.
I needed to reach the panic room hidden deep inside the basement wine cellar.
I slipped through the massive kitchen and scrambled down the dark, narrow stone stairs leading underground.
"You cannot hide from me, Chloe!" Grant's furious voice echoed down the stone corridor.
I reached the heavy steel door of the panic room and frantically punched in the six-digit security code Elias had given me.
The heavy deadbolts clicked loudly, and the door swung open just as Grant's flashlight beam swept the bottom of the stairs.
I threw myself inside and slammed the massive steel door shut with all my remaining strength.
The heavy locking mechanisms engaged instantly, sealing us safely inside the impenetrable vault.
Grant pounded furiously against the thick steel, screaming curses that were completely muffled by the soundproofing.
I collapsed onto the soft carpet of the panic room, gasping for air as Noah finally began to cry loudly.
I gently rocked my son, whispering soft, comforting words until his cries subsided into quiet hiccups.
The panic room was brilliantly illuminated by independent emergency lights and fully stocked with food and medical supplies.
I rushed over to the secure communications terminal built directly into the wall.
I pressed the large red emergency button to connect directly with Elias's private security headquarters.
The screen crackled to life, but instead of a security operator, a completely unexpected face appeared.
It was my mother, looking disheveled and absolutely terrified.

"Chloe, thank God you are alive," my mother sobbed frantically through the video feed.
"Grant is completely out of his mind, he is holding your father hostage at the corporate office!" she screamed.
