Chapter 1 - The Fatherless Lie

My mother looked at my newborn as though the nurse had carried in something disgraceful.

Not a seven-pound miracle.

Not her beautiful grandson.

Just another stain on the family's pristine reputation.

"We will never acknowledge a fatherless child," her voice was completely cold.

It was deliberate, without the slightest trace of maternal compassion.

My father stood right beside her in a perfectly pressed charcoal suit.

His arms were folded tightly across his chest in silent judgment.

"And we will never hold that baby," my father agreed.

The words settled over the small recovery room like heavy ice.

No one spoke a single word.

The only sound was the gentle rhythm of the heart monitor beside my hospital bed.

I lowered my eyes to my sleeping son.

Noah slept peacefully against my chest, completely unaware that his first moments in the world were already being judged.

His tiny fingers wrapped tightly around one of mine.

He was so incredibly small and trusting.

I waited for the heartbreak that everyone expected to hit me.

It never came.

Instead, I felt something far stronger.

Complete and absolute clarity.

"Then do not hold him," my voice was calm.

It was almost gentle.

My mother blinked in genuine surprise.

She had fully expected a dramatic flood of tears.

She wanted begging and an apology for humiliating the wealthy Mercer family.

For nine long months, she had told our relatives I was simply confused.

She insisted the baby's father had abandoned me and fled the state.

She confidently predicted I would surrender my child for adoption the moment reality finally crushed me.

Not once during my entire pregnancy did either of my parents ask a single question about the baby's father.

To them, the man simply did not matter.

In their arrogant eyes, I was still the quiet daughter who preferred reading spreadsheets to attending lavish parties.

I was the daughter who bought inexpensive dresses to fade into the background.

I was the daughter destined to live forever beneath the massive shadow of my older brother.

Grant Mercer was their golden child and the undisputed future of Mercer Development Group.

Everyone believed I had resigned from the family company two years earlier because I simply lacked ambition.

That was the convenient story my parents strongly preferred.

The reality was very different.

I left immediately after discovering millions of dollars in missing funds.

I found fabricated corporate invoices and shell companies that all traced directly back to Grant.

When I confronted my father with the hard financial evidence, he did not even investigate.

He did not ask a single question.

He looked me straight in the eye and called me a jealous, hysterical woman.

"You have always been too emotional for real business," my father had said.

So I stopped arguing right then and there.

Quietly and methodically, I copied every single document, record, and transaction onto a hidden hard drive.

Now, my mother stepped closer to my bed.

The sharp scent of her expensive perfume cut right through the sterile smell of the hospital recovery room.

She placed a thick, legal folder right beside my pillow.

"You will sign over your remaining shares in the company today," she ordered.

Her voice was crisp and completely devoid of empathy.

"Grant already has an aggressive buyer lined up."

"After this little public scandal, you are no longer fit to represent the Mercer family name," she sneered.

There it was.

The real reason they had come to the hospital.

Not to see me, not to meet Noah, and not even to pretend they cared about my health.

They only wanted my signature.

My father nodded once in agreement.

"Sign it today, and we will provide you with a modest monthly allowance," he bribed.

"If you refuse, you will raise that child completely alone in total poverty," he threatened.

I almost laughed out loud.

Before I went into labor, my personal attorney had warned me this exact scenario might happen.

My twelve-percent ownership stake was the final obstacle preventing Grant from gaining complete, absolute control of Mercer Development.

They did not come for their grandson; they came for my corporate shares.

"You should leave right now," I spoke quietly but firmly.

My mother stared at me in total disbelief.

"You are hardly in a position to give anyone orders, Chloe," she mocked.

Before I could even answer, the recovery room door swung open.

Every head in the room turned instantly.

A tall, striking man wearing a dark, tailored coat stepped confidently inside.

Behind him walked the hospital administrator and two extremely sharp attorneys in thousand-dollar suits.

The moment he saw baby Noah, his severe expression softened completely.

It was only for an instant.

Then his dark eyes shifted toward my stunned parents.

Everything in the room changed immediately.

The warmth vanished from his face entirely.

My father's folded arms slowly dropped to his sides in sheer shock.

My mother's face completely drained of color.

She whispered a single, terrifying name.

"Elias Vale..." she gasped.

Without taking his cold eyes off them, Elias crossed the room.

He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against my forehead.

Then he carefully touched our son's tiny, perfect cheek.

Only after that did he slowly turn to face my trembling parents.

His voice was incredibly quiet and tightly controlled.

May you like

It was far more frightening than if he had been screaming in anger.

"I believe you were just saying something about my son being fatherless?" Elias asked, looking directly at my father.
