Chapter 2 - The Steel Cage

Arthur stared blankly into the sudden darkness as the heavy metal shutters completely sealed off the kitchen from the outside world.

He had personally installed those reinforced titanium shields years ago to protect his family from potential armed burglars.

He never once imagined in his wildest dreams that they would be weaponized to trap his own terrified daughter inside her home.

"What exactly did you just do, Vanessa?"

Vanessa casually walked over to the kitchen island and smoothly poured herself a large glass of expensive red wine in the dim emergency lighting.

"I am simply securing my valuable property from erratic intruders, Arthur."

He stepped forward aggressively with his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned completely white.

"This is my family home and you have no right to do this."

Vanessa took a painfully slow sip of her dark red wine and laughed softly into the quiet room.

"That is not exactly true anymore."

She tossed a neatly folded legal document carelessly onto the cold marble counter right in front of him.

Arthur cautiously grabbed the thick paper and strained his eyes to read the first bold paragraph in the low light.

His racing heart dropped heavily into the bottom of his stomach as he recognized the official state seal.

It was a fully notarized deed transfer clearly stating that her private holding company now legally owned his entire estate.

"You somehow forged my signature on these legal documents."

Vanessa smiled brightly and leaned comfortably against the edge of the granite counter.

"My wonderful lawyer friend David is a remarkably talented man when it comes to replicating signatures."

Arthur frantically pulled his personal cell phone from his suit pocket to dial the local police department.

The bright digital screen displayed zero signal bars and a warning message about network unavailability.

"The military-grade cell service jammers in the attic are currently active."

She pointed a long, manicured finger confidently toward the dark main hallway.

"And I personally severed the physical landlines with a pair of gardening shears over an hour ago."

Arthur slowly realized with mounting horror that they were completely cut off from the outside world without any way to call for help.

Sophie whimpered very quietly while hiding completely behind his long legs.

Arthur gently scooped his trembling daughter up into his strong arms and held her protectively against his chest.

"I am walking out the front door with my daughter right now and you cannot physically stop me."

Vanessa did not make any sudden attempt to block his path to the hallway.

She just smiled wickedly as the terrifying sound of heavy footsteps began echoing loudly from the dark front entryway.

A remarkably tall man holding a solid wooden baseball bat stepped slowly into the dim emergency lighting.

It was his most trusted corporate lawyer and oldest friend, David.

David menacingly tapped the heavy wooden bat against his open palm with a twisted, wicked grin on his face.

"I really do not think you are going anywhere tonight, boss."
