Chapter 1 - The Cold Stare

The man ran frantically into the white kitchen and stopped abruptly like his heart had been violently ripped out of his chest.
His little girl was kneeling awkwardly on the cold marble floor in her favorite pink dress, crying so incredibly hard that her tiny shoulders shook uncontrollably.
Right in front of her trembling knees was a heavy ceramic dog bowl.
Her small hands and pale mouth were completely covered in something brown and disgusting.
She was desperately trying to swallow the foul mixture while thick tears ran relentlessly down her face.
"Sophie, stop!"
He dropped immediately to his knees beside her and gently grabbed her shaking arms to pull her away from the mess.
"Oh my God, sweetheart, why are you eating this?"
Sophie looked up at him slowly with absolute, undeniable terror swimming in her bright blue eyes.
She was not showing even a single hint of childish embarrassment.
She was purely and utterly terrified for her life.
Her tiny lips trembled as she struggled to form the words through her heavy sobs.
"Please do not tell Miss Vanessa."
The man froze completely as a sudden wave of icy dread washed over his entire body.
"Miss Vanessa?"
Sophie nodded her head rapidly while crying even harder into her small dirty hands.
"She said if I wasted expensive food again, I had to eat on the floor like a very bad girl."
His breath caught painfully in his tight throat as his mind struggled to process this horrific cruelty.
He aggressively pulled her into his arms so tightly that she clung desperately to his expensive work suit.
Then he suddenly heard the distinct, sharp clicking of heavy designer heels walking across the floorboards right behind him.
The approaching footsteps were painfully slow and agonizingly methodical.
They were completely calm and entirely devoid of any natural human panic.
He turned his head slowly to see who was standing there.
Vanessa stood silently in the massive doorway wearing a sleek black dress, watching them intently without a single tear in her cold, calculating eyes.
Sophie buried her dirty face deeper into his warm jacket and whispered frantically into his ear.
"Daddy, she is going to punish me really badly now."
Arthur stood up slowly from the cold marble floor while carefully keeping his small trembling daughter hidden safely behind his legs.
Vanessa tilted her perfectly styled head slightly to the side and offered a chilling, perfectly rehearsed smile.
"Arthur, darling, you are completely misunderstanding this unfortunate little situation."
Her steady voice was incredibly smooth like sweet honey but undeniably twice as toxic.
Arthur felt his hot blood boil with rage as he glared viciously at the beautiful woman he had almost married.
"Get out of my house right this second before I call the police."
Vanessa did not move a single inch backward or show any sign of fear.
She casually reached into her expensive leather purse and pulled out a small, metallic black remote control.
"I am afraid I simply cannot do that right now."

She pressed a bright red button on the small device with her perfectly manicured thumb.
Heavy steel security shutters slammed violently down over all the kitchen windows, plunging the massive room into complete and utter darkness.
