Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Alliance

The rain continued to pour through the broken window, soaking the expensive rug beneath Fay's feet.

Dominic kept the gun leveled at her chest, his finger resting dangerously close to the trigger.

He told her that Leo Moretti did not murder his own children.

Fay let out a bitter, exhausted laugh that echoed in the dark room.

She explained that she was an illegitimate daughter, a secret Leo wanted buried before his political campaign began.

Carmine grunted in pain, leaning heavily against the doorframe to stay upright.

He told Dominic that they did not have time for family drama, because the hit squad was moving up the stairs.

Dominic stared at Fay for three long seconds, weighing her life against his survival.

He finally lowered his weapon.

He told her that if she was lying, he would shoot her himself when the sun came up.

Fay nodded quickly, grateful just to draw another breath.

Dominic turned his attention back to Carmine, asking about the escape routes.

Carmine said the main elevators were cut, and the stairs were heavily guarded by Moretti's men.

The only way out was the hidden service elevator behind the library, but it required a physical key.

Dominic swore loudly.

The keys were kept in the security office on the ground floor, right in the middle of the enemy forces.

Fay looked at the broken glass on the floor, an insane idea forming in her head.

She told Dominic that they did not need a key to open the elevator shaft.

She said she knew how to bypass the electrical lock from the outside.

Dominic frowned, asking where a mafia boss's secret daughter learned to hotwire commercial elevators.

Fay gave him a grim smile.

She said she learned it by escaping the basement her father had locked her in for two years.

Carmine agreed to lay down covering fire while Fay pushed Dominic’s wheelchair down the dark corridor.

They moved silently out of the master suite, navigating the pitch-black hallways by memory.

The mansion felt like a massive tomb, smelling of gunsmoke and copper.

They reached the heavy oak doors of the library just as flashlights swept across the far end of the hall.

Moretti’s men were closing in fast, their heavy boots thundering toward them.

Fay shoved the wheelchair into the library and slammed the doors, locking them tight.

She ran to the service elevator hidden behind a false bookshelf and pried the control panel open with a letter opener.

Sparks flew as she crossed the wires, praying the old mechanism still had backup power.

The doors hissed open, revealing a dark, empty shaft and a small service car waiting inside.

She pushed Dominic into the car and slammed her hand on the basement button.

As the car began to descend, they heard the library doors splinter and crash open above them.

The elevator rattled downward, plunging them into the cold, damp depths of the mansion.

When the doors finally opened in the underground garage, Dominic rolled forward, ready to fight.

But the garage was not empty.

Standing in front of Dominic’s armored transport vehicle was Vincent, holding a duffel bag full of cash.

And Vincent was pointing his gun directly at Dominic’s head.
