Chapter 2 - The Enemy Inside

Dominic stared at Fay as the spilled broth soaked into his white shirt.

His grip on her wrist did not loosen.

He searched her face for any sign of a lie, any twitch of deception.

Fay did not look away, despite the painful pressure on her bones.

Dominic finally released her and yelled for Vincent.

The door flew open seconds later, the security chief entering with his hand already resting on his holstered weapon.

Dominic pointed at the spilled soup on the floor.

He ordered Vincent to bring a stray dog from the alley and feed it a spoonful of the broth.

Vincent did not ask questions.

He scooped some of the liquid into a small cup and left the room.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Dominic wheeled himself backward, keeping a safe distance from the tray.

He asked Fay how a common housemaid knew the scent of cyanide.

Fay swallowed hard, keeping her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron.

She lied, saying she had smelled it at a previous job where they killed pests.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed, clearly not believing a single word of her explanation.

Ten minutes later, Vincent returned to the bedroom.

His face was pale, and his jaw was clenched tight.

He told Dominic that the stray dog died less than sixty seconds after licking the cup.

Dominic closed his eyes, taking a deep, ragged breath.

He ordered Vincent to bring Mrs. Gable upstairs immediately.

Vincent shook his head slowly.

He said they could not bring her upstairs.

Dominic opened his eyes, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

He asked Vincent why his simple order could not be followed.

Vincent looked at Fay, then back to his boss.

He explained that he had gone to the kitchen to find the housekeeper.

But Mrs. Gable was already dead on the floor.

Someone had slit her throat while Fay was walking up the stairs.
