Chapter 5 - The Betrayed Boss

Carmine stood in the doorway, his uniform soaked in rain and blood.

He held a suppressed submachine gun in his right hand, the barrel pointed down at the floor.

Dominic did not lower his pistol.

He asked Carmine where he had been for the last three days.

Carmine took a slow, painful breath, clutching a deep wound on his side.

He said he had been locked in the basement storage freezer by the new men.

He explained that half of the security team had been bought out by a rival family.

Fay watched the exchange, her mind struggling to process the level of betrayal within the house.

Dominic asked who was paying the traitors to murder him in his own bed.

Carmine coughed, a terrible, wet sound that meant he was bleeding internally.

He looked at Dominic with absolute sorrow in his eyes.

He said the hit was ordered by Leo Moretti, the most ruthless crime boss on the east coast.

When Fay heard that name, she stopped breathing entirely.

The color drained from her face, and her hands began to shake violently.

Dominic noticed her reaction instantly.

He shifted his gaze from Carmine to Fay, his eyes narrowing with deep suspicion.

He asked Fay why the name Moretti made her look like she had seen a ghost.

Fay backed away, hitting the edge of the shattered window frame.

She shook her head, frantically denying that she knew anything about the mafia.

Carmine suddenly raised his weapon, pointing it directly at Fay's chest.

He told Dominic that she was not a desperate renter looking for a paycheck.

Carmine revealed that he had searched her small handbag while she was cooking breakfast yesterday.

He had found a fake passport hidden inside the lining of her cheap purse.

The passport bore the last name Moretti.

Dominic’s jaw tightened, and he slowly turned his gun away from the door and aimed it at Fay.

He realized the woman who had saved his life earlier was actually the daughter of his greatest enemy.

He demanded to know why the Moretti family had sent their own blood to clean his floors.

Fay looked down the barrel of Dominic’s gun, knowing her lies were completely exhausted.

She closed her eyes and whispered the truth.

She said she was not sent to kill him.

She said she was hiding in his house because her own father was trying to murder her.
