Chapter 9 - The Truth

Fay felt the air violently leave her lungs.
She stared at the woman who had raised her, completely unable to process what was happening.
Her mother was standing gracefully in the freezing rain, showing absolutely no signs of the neurological disease that had plagued her for years.
"Mom?" Fay whispered, her voice cracking in pure disbelief.
Her mother briefly glanced at Fay with an expression of cold, clinical detachment.
"Grow up, Fay," her mother dismissed her cruelly before turning her attention back to Marcone.
"The infiltration is completely compromised now because your mercenaries are incompetent," her mother yelled at the rival boss.
Fay stumbled backward, the devastating truth crashing down on her like a physical weight.
The illness, the massive medical bills, the desperation that forced her to work for the syndicate.
It had all been a meticulously crafted lie.
Her mother was a former syndicate assassin who had used her own daughter as a blind pawn to infiltrate the Cross estate.
Vincent did not look surprised by this horrific revelation at all.
He casually reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic remote.
"I knew exactly who you were the moment you forged those hospital records three years ago, Evelyn," Vincent stated calmly.
Fay's mother turned to Vincent, her eyes narrowing with genuine hatred.
"If you knew, why did you let the girl into your house?" her mother hissed.
"Because keeping my enemies under my own roof is the easiest way to control them," Vincent replied coldly.
Vincent pressed the single red button on the metallic remote.
The dark rooftops of the surrounding warehouses instantly lit up with the blinding lasers of Vincent’s hidden sniper team.
Before Marcone or his mercenaries could even raise their weapons, a synchronized volley of suppressed gunfire rained down from the sky.
The mercenaries dropped to the wet pavement instantly.
Marcone took a bullet to the shoulder and collapsed screaming in agony.

Fay's mother immediately threw her hands in the air, falling to her knees and adopting a mask of absolute terror.
"Please, Vincent, he forced me to do it!" her mother cried out, flawlessly transitioning back into the role of a helpless victim.
