Chapter 6 - The Target

Fay stumbled backward away from the monitors, her hands trembling violently.
"They are looking for me," she whispered, her mind failing to comprehend the madness.
Vincent wrapped a pressure bandage tightly around his shoulder and stood up.
He turned to her, his gray eyes burning with an intense, terrifying suspicion.
"Who are you really, Fay?" Vincent demanded, stepping closer to her.
"I am just a maid!" Fay cried out, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"Maids do not have highly trained paramilitary hit squads hunting them," Vincent countered coldly.
Fay shook her head frantically, swearing on her mother's life that she knew absolutely nothing.
Vincent stared at her for a long, agonizing moment before finally believing the genuine terror in her eyes.
He pulled a heavy satellite phone from a lockbox on the wall and dialed a secure number.
"This is Cross," Vincent spoke into the phone.
"I have a rat infestation at the main estate; send the cleaners immediately."
He hung up the phone and checked the ammunition in his pistol.
Twenty minutes later, the security monitors displayed a convoy of black SUVs tearing up the estate driveway.
Vincent’s loyal enforcers flooded the mansion, mercilessly slaughtering the rogue mercenaries.
When the gunfire finally ceased, Vincent opened the heavy steel door of the panic room.
He guided Fay through the ruined hallways, carefully shielding her eyes from the bloody bodies littering the floor.
They reached the front courtyard, where a heavily armored transport vehicle was waiting for them.
Just as Vincent opened the passenger door for her, his cell phone rang loudly.
He answered it, putting the device on speakerphone so his lieutenants could hear.
"Vincent Cross," a raspy, taunting voice echoed from the phone.
"Who is this?" Vincent demanded, his posture instantly stiffening.
"My name is Marcone, and I believe you have something that belongs to me," the voice sneered.
"I have nothing of yours," Vincent replied sharply.
May you like
"Oh, I think you do," Marcone laughed dryly.
"And if you don't hand the girl over, her mother is going to have a very fatal accident in her hospital bed."
