Chapter 7 - The Ransom

Fay felt the world spin wildly out of control.
She grabbed Vincent’s arm, her fingernails digging desperately into his tailored jacket.
"Please, you have to save her," Fay begged, completely forgetting the rules of addressing a mafia boss.
Vincent held up a hand to silence her, his eyes locked dangerously on the glowing phone screen.
"If you touch the older woman, I will burn your entire syndicate to the ground," Vincent promised in a deadly whisper.
Marcone simply laughed at the threat.
"I don't want a war, Cross, I just want the girl," Marcone replied smoothly.
"Bring Fay to the abandoned shipping yards at Pier 40 in one hour."
"And if I refuse?" Vincent challenged.
"Then you can pick up her mother's body from the morgue," Marcone threatened before abruptly ending the call.
The courtyard was dead silent, filled only with the sound of the idling armored vehicle.
Fay let go of Vincent’s arm and took a step back, wiping her tears.
She knew how the mafia worked.
She was just a maid, an expendable liability that had already caused too much trouble.
There was absolutely no way Vincent Cross was going to risk his empire for her mother.
"I will go," Fay said, her voice shaking but resolute.
"I will turn myself in if he lets her go."
Vincent looked at her, his expression entirely unreadable.
He reached into the waistband of his trousers and pulled out a sleek, fully loaded secondary pistol.
Fay expected him to point it at her and force her into the car.
Instead, Vincent turned the weapon around and pressed the heavy grip firmly into her trembling hands.
"You are not turning yourself in to anyone," Vincent stated, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
He opened the heavy armored door of the SUV.

"Get in the car, Fay," Vincent ordered.
"We are going to get your mother back, and then we are going to kill every last one of them."
