Chapter 2 - The Mess

Fay remained on the freezing kitchen floor for five full minutes after Vincent left.

Her mind raced with absolute terror.

Donovan’s suite was located in the opulent east wing of the estate.

Vincent had just ordered her to go back to the very man who had assaulted her.

She picked up her cleaning caddy with violently shaking hands.

She had no choice but to obey the head of the Cross family.

She walked up the grand staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The corridors of the east wing were silent and draped in heavy, suffocating shadows.

She reached the heavy oak door of the guest suite and hesitated.

She raised her trembling fist and knocked softly.

There was no answer.

She slowly turned the brass knob and pushed the door open.

Fay stepped inside and immediately dropped her cleaning caddy.

Plastic bottles of bleach crashed onto the expensive Persian rug.

The luxurious bedroom had been entirely destroyed.

Lamps were shattered, antique chairs were splintered, and the silk curtains were torn from their rods.

In the center of the room, Donovan was kneeling on the floor.

His face was a bloody, unrecognizable pulp, and his breathing was a wet, ragged wheeze.

Vincent Cross sat casually in a leather armchair near the window.

He was calmly wiping blood from his knuckles with a pristine white linen handkerchief.

Fay clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a scream.

Vincent looked up from his hands and locked eyes with her.

"I told you to clean up the mess, Fay," Vincent said smoothly.

Donovan groaned in agony, spitting a mixture of blood and shattered teeth onto the carpet.

"He will be leaving the estate tonight, and he will never touch another woman again," Vincent promised, tossing the bloody handkerchief onto Donovan’s lap.

Fay could not process the brutal reality of what the billionaire boss had just done for a lowly maid.

Vincent stood up and buttoned his suit jacket.

"You are no longer a floor maid in this house," Vincent declared.

Fay blinked in confusion, her fear momentarily replaced by shock.

"Starting tomorrow morning, you work exclusively for me," Vincent added, walking toward the exit.

He stopped in the doorway and looked back at her over his broad shoulder.

"Pack your things, Fay, because you are moving into the executive wing."
