Chapter 6 - The Desperate Ploy

"They tracked the snowmobile," Daniel realized, his heart sinking into his stomach.
He grabbed the medical supplies and shoved them into his survival bag.
"We cannot let the police take us," Grace said urgently, struggling to sit up.
"Robert owns half the police force in this county, we will never make it to a jail cell alive."
Daniel nodded, knowing she was absolutely right.
He grabbed a heavy oxygen tank from the corner of the clinic and rolled it toward the back exit.
He cracked the valve slightly and shoved a piece of cloth into the nozzle.
"When I say go, run for the alley," Daniel instructed, pulling out his silver lighter.
He ignited the cloth and kicked the heavy metal tank straight toward the front lobby.
The pressurized oxygen tank exploded with a deafening roar, shattering the front windows in a massive fireball.
The police officers outside dove for cover, yelling frantically into their radios.
"Go!" Daniel yelled, pushing the back door open.
They sprinted down the dark, icy alleyway, the smoke from the explosion providing cover.
They slipped into the shadows of an old, abandoned warehouse near the train tracks.
Daniel pulled out a burner phone he kept in his survival kit for corporate emergencies.
"We need the master ledger," Daniel explained, pacing the dirty floor.
"Robert can fake video footage, but he cannot alter the physical servers in the Boston tower."
"If we get that data, we prove he stole the money and murdered Marcus."
"But your face is on every television in the state," Grace pointed out anxiously.
Daniel looked down at the dark warehouse floor, formulating a desperate plan.
"He is expecting a billionaire on the run," Daniel said slowly.
He took his expensive tuxedo jacket and threw it into a rusted garbage drum.
He rubbed engine grease on his face, messed up his hair, and stole an oversized flannel shirt from a homeless encampment.
Two hours later, they boarded a freight train headed straight into the heart of Boston.
They jumped off near the towering glass skyscraper of Whitfield Logistics at four in the morning.
Daniel successfully bypassed the outer security grid using an old backdoor code he designed himself.
They reached the massive titanium doors of the main server room on the fiftieth floor.
"I need Marcus's old security badge," Daniel said, turning to Grace.
Grace pulled the worn plastic badge from her pocket and swiped it through the reader.
The heavy doors hissed open, granting them access to the glowing blue servers.
Daniel immediately plugged his drive in and began downloading the unalterable master ledger.

The download bar hit ninety-nine percent.
Then, a heavy steel lockdown shutter slammed down over the only exit, trapping them inside.
